To stop sexual assault and other forms of abuse before they start, we need to address the bigger picture in which they occur. The main forces behind sexual violence are not individual actions but the ways society has been shaped by systems of oppression, attitudes, and norms that allow the unequal treatment of certain groups over others. On #BlueUmbrellaDay, we remind the world that anyone can be affected by sexual violence, including boys. According to Family for Every Child, 1 in 13 boys worldwide experience sexual abuse, while many more are exploited or exposed to inappropriate sexual content. These experiences have long-term negative consequences for boys’ health and wellbeing, which in turn affects all of us. 🌟 International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict 🌟 On this significant day, let’s shed light on the devastating impact of sexual violence in conflict zones, particularly on women and children. 🌍💔 🔹 Disproportionate Impact on Women and Girls: Women and girls bear the brunt of conflict-related sexual violence, accounting for over 95% of UN-verified cases. Men and boys also suffer, albeit to a lesser extent. 🔹 Health Consequences: Sexual violence leaves lasting scars on survivors’ physical, sexual, reproductive, and mental health. Victims face increased risks of sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, and infertility. The trauma can reverberate across generations, affecting families and communities. 🔹 Social Fabric and Livelihoods: Beyond health, sexual violence shatters the social fabric of communities. It curtails women’s livelihoods and disrupts girls’ education. Armed groups profit from conflict-driven human trafficking for sexual exploitation1. # Urgent Call for Action: Let’s demand urgent action to combat conflict-related sexual violence. Hospitals and healthcare facilities must be safe havens for survivors, providing healing and support. Recognizing All Forms of Gender-Based Violence Gender-based violence goes beyond physical harm—it includes emotional, financial, psychological, sexual, and digital abuse, as well as social isolation and reproductive control. Recognizing all forms of violence is essential to supporting survivors and building safer communities. Violence can take many forms: from controlling finances, to isolating a partner from loved ones, to harassment online. Together, we can raise awareness of these often-hidden abuses and ensure that every survivor is seen and supported. Let’s come together to educate ourselves and others. By the age of 19, nearly 1 in 4 adolescent girls in relationships experience physical, sexual, or psychological abuse from their partners. This numbers is proof that we need stronger education on healthy relationships, stricter protections for young women, and societal accountability for ending abuse.
