The Technical Assistance Unit (TAU) - Support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ethiopia Programme, funded by the European Union 🇪🇺 and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) International Services-led consortium with DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, works with the criminal justice institutions to empower Ethiopian citizens by promoting understanding of fundamental rights. As we continue to explore fundamental rights in Ethiopia, let's delve into the Right to Freedom of Expression. This right ensures that citizens have the power to: 💡 Freely express their ideas and opinions: Whether through speech, writing, art, or any other form of communication, individuals have the right to share their perspectives without fear of censorship or reprisal. ℹ Access information: The right to freedom of expression includes the right to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. This right is essential to promote diverse viewpoints, critical thinking, and enable citizens to participate actively in their communities. Let's work together to ensure that this fundamental right is upheld for all Ethiopians. #EU GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti #CriminalJusticeReform #Ethiopia #Justice4All #CriminalJustice #Reform #TechnicalAssistance #LegalReform #RuleOfLaw #HumanRights #AccessToJustice #JusticeReform #LegalAid #JusticeForAll #UNODC #KnowYourRights #Equality #AccessToJustice #KnowYourRights #Ethiopia #FreedomOfExpression #HumanRights

In my nearly two decades of leading USAID activities in the Middle East, I've found that USAID isn't just a funding source; it's a knowledge hub. Every phase of a USAID program, from inception to evaluation, is rich with meticulously crafted guidelines, clear toolkits, and expert guidance. However, despite this wealth of resources, local organizations often fail to fully benefit. Why? This knowledge asymmetry presents a critical challenge. Therefore, I want to emphasize a key issue: Cultural sensitivity and conflict awareness. In the MENA context, where the boundaries between civil society, moderate actors, and governmental bodies blur, integrating cultural and conflict lenses into local strengthening tools is essential for success. #usaid #localization #statedepartment #mena

Since #2010, the momentum for adoption and implementation of #accesstoinformation has picked up and the number of African countries with #accesstoinformation laws has increased from five in 2010 to 29 in #2024. While a considerable number of countries are yet to adopt #ATI laws and implementation challenges persist, there are thousands of good #ATI stories that are neither known nor told. Ten most outstanding #ATI cases in #Africa will be profiled and celebrated during the global commemoration of the 2024 International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) to be hosted by the Government of Ghana and UNESCO, under the theme, “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Public Participation Practices across Government Sectors”.

Our latest article introducing the theme of our recently released book 'Borderless Africa'. Although it is sometimes suggested that the case in favour of the AfCFTA has been won on the continent, concerns still persist in some quarters. Our book was intended to address those concerns and explain why the AfCFTA is necessary, and why its implementation should be prioritised. https://lnkd.in/eRENAaV4 #AfCFTA #Africantrade #economicintegration

Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International: - “After more than four months of conflict, Israel’s campaign of retaliation against Hamas has been characterized by a pattern of war crimes and violations of international law.” - “Israel forcibly displaced Palestinians, imposing conditions that have left hundreds of thousands without basic human necessities. It has carried out indiscriminate, disproportionate, and direct attacks on civilians and “civilian objects,” such as schools and hospitals.” - “Today’s diplomatic complicity in the catastrophic human rights and humanitarian crisis in Gaza is the culmination of years of erosion of the international rule of law and global human rights system.” - “Israel’s massive bombardment of Gaza has roots that go deeper in history than the long running “war on terror,” including the 1948 expulsion of roughly 750,000 Palestinians from their homes, which came to be known as the nakba, or catastrophe.” Read on.
