‘Tis the season for holiday gift exchanges, and I’d like to share about an alternative - an imaginary white elephant.    No actual gifts needed. Just getting people together with paper, pens, and gift bags. Following the rules of a white elephant gift exchange, ask each participant to think of a gift they’d like to offer no matter the cost, practicality, or connection to reality. (e.g. it could be a superpower.) The more creative the imaginary gifts, the more interesting the game will be. Some people may opt for sincere, others for ridiculousness or humor. You’re certain to learn more about guests based on what they come up with and how they react to the gift ideas of others. Guests could bring their own unique bags, or the host could provide them. Give people time to write out their gift idea and place it in a bag before starting the white elephant game. I did this with a conversation group I was facilitating a few years ago, and it resulted in fun surprises and new insights about one another. Plus, no one stressed about what to bring! Quick informal survey... Let's say you are attending an event (conference / meeting / party) where the host is giving everyone a small gift...as the recipient of the gift, would you rather get an identical thing to everyone else there or would you rather choose from among several similar options? Similar options could be things like the same item, but a different style or color. Edit to original post since initial responses are leaning towards choice... there are some benefits to giving everyone the same thing and there are some benefits to receiving the same item as everyone else. I would like to uncover some of the benefits of each approach for the recipient if possible. (I've been helping to give gifts for years under particular assumptions and am questioning those assumptions to see what I can learn 😀 )
