United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, June 26 As we approach June 26th, the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we, at Centre for Disability in Development (CDD), reflect deeply on the profound impact of torture on persons, families, and communities worldwide. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the resilience of survivors and the urgent need to uphold human dignity and justice for all. At CDD, our commitment to this cause remains unwavering. Through advocacy, legal support, psychosocial care, and awareness-raising initiatives, we strive to empower survivors and their communities. We collaborate with local and international partners to strengthen protections, enhance rehabilitation services, and promote human rights education as fundamental tools in our collective fight against torture. Together, let us forge ahead with hope and determination, knowing that our collective efforts today will shape a future where torture has no place in our world. Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) affirms the fundamental right of persons with disabilities (PWDs) to live independently and be included in the community. It strongly discourages the institutionalization of PWDs. In Pakistan, while there has been some progress in disability inclusion, the increasing trend of institutionalizing PWDs poses a significant threat to their rights and well-being. As disability and human rights activists, we must strongly condemn this practice, or we risk facing even greater challenges in the future. On July 23, 2024, the Charlottesville Human Rights Commission (HRC) launched a public consultation to gather community feedback on critical human rights issues. Key Details: - Purpose: To align legislative priorities with community needs in affordable housing, homelessness, and supportive services. - Expert Panels: Hosted two panels with local service providers, state legislators, and other human rights commissions in Virginia. - Public Survey: Open until 5 PM on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Provides an opportunity to identify priorities or offer new suggestions. Next Steps: Commissioners will review feedback and draft recommendations at their Work Session Meeting on Thursday, August 1, 2024. Restrictive practices harm and violate the autonomy and dignity of people with disability. This harm is a lived reality for many in our community. Restrictive practices are used in a number of ways against people with disability – in particular those with psychosocial disability. PWDA wants to see their full elimination. 📢 Thrilled to share a clip from my panel talk at the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) Freedom Drive at the EU Parliament! 🎤 Over the past two years, my research and work in the UK have focused on developing Disabled People-Led Organisations (DPOs). During this panel, I had the chance to share insights from my research, which examines trends in the resourcing and action of these vital community organisations and identifies the development needs of the DPO sector. In my talk, I emphasized the critical role of intersectional DPOs—those led by disabled people with intersecting identities—and the importance of cross-movement organising with the broader social justice ecosystem. I also discussed the necessity of centring Disability Justice principles in our collective efforts. Every year on this International Day for Human Rights the Commissioner for Children & Young People, SA, releases her Childs Rights Progress Reports. A suite of seven reports, they assess the progress South Australia has made in relation to implementation of the recommendations made to Australia by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The seven areas in which Australia is falling short include child health, child justice, child protection, disability, education, the environment and physical punishment. Although there is ‘some evidence of progress’ in all seven areas, there is also no evidence of progress on some of the recommendations the UN Committee has made. This means South Australia has significant work to do before we can say we have fulfilled our international obligations under the UNCRC.
