Policies and social norms play a crucial role in shaping attitudes and behaviors that impact contraceptive use, healthcare access, and pregnancy timing. Government and health sector policies provide structural support for sexual and reproductive health (SRH), while gender norms shape societal expectations. EngenderHealth’s approach to gender-equitable programming focuses on building agency, changing relations, and transforming structures. We build agency by ensuring women and girls have sexual and reproductive health-related knowledge, skills, decision-making power. We change relations by engaging with men and boys, supporting equitable decision-making within families, and supporting self-health groups to build collective movements. We transform structures by advocating for gender equality in laws and policies, integrating gender and youth analysis into programs and projects, and engaging with community groups to change unjust social norms. #HeathEquity #HealthForAll

Engaging Boys in Conversations About Menstruation The Importance of Discussing Periods with Boys Engaging boys in discussions about menstruation goes beyond mere education; it cultivates empathy, understanding, and mutual respect. Here’s why initiating these conversations is vital: 1.Advancing Gender Equality: Open dialogues about menstruation challenge stereotypes and foster a culture of respect across all genders. When boys gain insight into the biological experiences of girls, they are more likely to offer support and solidarity. 2. Eliminating Stigma: Normalizing discussions around periods helps to dismantle the stigma that often surrounds menstruation. This creates a more supportive environment for those who menstruate, encouraging them to articulate their needs confidently. 3. Fostering Healthy Relationships: Understanding menstruation enhances compassion and strengthens interpersonal relationships. Boys who are educated about periods are better prepared to support their friends and partners during their menstrual cycles. 4. Enhancing Mental Well-Being: Knowledge is empowering. When boys understand the physical and emotional complexities of menstruation, it alleviates feelings of discomfort or embarrassment, leading to healthier interactions. 5. Empowering Future Generations: Educating boys today creates a positive ripple effect for tomorrow. As they grow into informed men, they can advocate for menstrual health and education, further advancing this essential cause. Tips for Initiating the Conversation - Utilize age-appropriate language and resources. - Share factual information and dispel common myths. - Encourage questions and foster an open dialogue. Why is it important to talk about men and masculinity? 🗣️Is the role of men in gender and reproductive health rights passive? Absolutely not! It's high time we open up conversations about traditional notions of men and masculinity. These discussions can help uproot the deeply embedded inequalities and violence in our society. 🟠 Men’s Role in Reproductive Health and Family Planning: Share the responsibilities of family planning—it's not just for women. Men need to step up and increase their involvement in crucial matters like family planning to pave the way for equality. 🟠 Ending Gender-Based Violence: True masculinity rejects violence and embraces respect and equality. With the right mindset, we can gradually eliminate gender-based disparities in our communities. 🟠 Taking Care of Mental Health: "Men don't cry"—let's break this harmful myth. Men deserve the right to express their emotions and access opportunities to release mental stress. 🟠 Gender Equality and Leadership: Men's empathetic leadership can be a driving force in the fight against gender inequality. Through such discussions, we can build a society where men and women share equal rights and responsibilities. Let’s prioritize equality over division and create a better future for all. #GenderEquality #InclusiveSociety #MasculinityRedefined

Today marks the 68th Women’s Day celebration. Under the theme “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women's Development,” we celebrate the 20 000 South African women from all walks of life that marched to the Union Buildings to protest the pass laws and break the apartheid barrier. In the wake of the challenges and progress made in the past three decades, we are reminded of the immense strides taken towards gender equality while simultaneously acknowledging the persistent gaps that remain. We continue to recommit ourselves to the spirit of Women’s Day by championing the rights and well-being of our young women. With the overall goal of mitigating the prevalence of social challenges that significantly affect young women, such as teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence, we have committed to an advocacy campaign that seeks to promote access to youth-friendly healthcare services in hopes of empowering young women with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, thereby reducing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. By investing in the health and empowerment of our young women, we are not only fulfilling our historical obligation but also building a stronger, more equitable planet for all. #Women’sDay2024#Women’sRights#AccessToHealthCareFacilities#YouthEmpowerment#YMCAVision2030#SRHR

Women are treated as second-class citizens in many countries in the world. In the United States, women still have to fight for their reproductive rights. It is 2024. Think about this for a minute. We are talking about bodily autonomy. A basic human right. --- Violence against women is at epidemic levels: - It is sadly part of our daily life. Men disposability is embedded in the fabric of society: - It is sadly part of our daily life. These issues are not gender issues: they are cultural issues. We live in a culture that denigrate feminine attributes. It hurts everyone. 💔 We need to: 1) Eliminate the zero sum thinking, once and for all. 2) Address the larger imbalance of masculine and feminine attributes and stop attributing them different inner value, based on who is performing them. ➡️ Otherwise we will remain stuck. Stuck in a battle of the sexes. --- Let us stop splitting our humanity in half.
