We would like to thank the European Parliament under the leadership of Roberta Metsola for the extraordinary support and generosity in allowing Ukrainian Civil Society the use of Station Europe over the past two and a half years. Situated at the heart of European democracy, this space became our cherished home – a place where we could convene, collaborate, and actively support Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees during an incredibly challenging time. At the very beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, when we reached out with a request for premises close to the European Quarter or the centre of Brussels, Roberta Metsola responded with generosity far beyond our expectations. Providing us with a building directly in front of the European Parliament – a cornerstone of European democracy – showcased not only her unwavering support but also a commitment to stand visibly with Ukraine. Station Europe became not only a place but also a platform where we could amplify the voice of Ukrainian civil society. Thanks to the commitment of the President of the European Parliament, our calls for support reached beyond Brussels, echoing across the entire European Union. This platform enabled Ukrainians to hold around 500 events, showcasing the resilience of Ukraine’s people, fostering European solidarity, and bringing together allies in support of our cause. Additionally, it spurred the creation of new organisations, established meaningful connections, and generated innovative ideas, ultimately positioning Station Europe at the forefront of civil society resistance in the heart of the EU. Although, Station Europe will no longer be available for Ukrainian organisations, Promote Ukraine remains committed to the cause of the Ukrainian Civil Society Hub - https://lnkd.in/euckH4G6. Therefore, we offer other spaces in Brussels that we have in our availability to the Ukrainian organisations that can be used for co-working, exhibitions, small-scale events, workshops, meetings etc.

🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇫🇮 🇳🇴 🇦🇽 🇫🇴 🇮🇸 🇬🇱 The Youth Peace & Security Seminar at Hanasaari - Hanaholmen in Helsinki was a meeting place for bright discussion and Nordic exchange with 100 participants across the Nordic Nations. Last month, we dove into crucial debates and workshops on advancing peace and security, driven by insights from civil society and young political figures. Key takeaways I learned from was: - Direct dialogues and information from decision-makers. - Gaining insights into how civil society works with politics across Nordic countries. - Learning from interactive workshops enhancing our skills and deepening our understanding of regional security challenges in the Nordics. - Learning from other experienced participants. - Hearing inspirational stories from other participants regarding their engagement. As Finland and Sweden move towards NATO membership amid global security challenges from environment to AI, it's crucial to consider what lies ahead for Nordic cooperation. With the brilliant minds I've met here, I'm optimistic about our future direction. Heartfelt thanks to DUF - Dansk Ungdoms Fællesråd and the NORÐ project for organising this event & LSU - The National Council of Swedish Children and Youth Organisations for making this experience possible.

💡 Last week, the Friends of Europe team took part in Are We Europe's Check'Europe conference, designed to collectively rethink how we can effectively address European issues and combat misinformation. We discussed the importance of nuanced narratives, moving beyond stereotypes and embracing complexity. This is a key element to tackling Europe’s decline in civic engagement, by making democracy more accessible and relevant for all. This approach aligns with our 10 Policy Choices for a #RenewedSocialContract for Europe, as we believe that by equipping ourselves with knowledge and tools – such as identifying misinformation and disinformation – we can empower individuals, strengthen social bonds, create trust in society and contribute to positive transformations for a stronger democracy that works for all. Thank you to Are We Europe and Awe Studio for facilitating such an insightful event! #Disinformation #EUDemocracy #Voices4Choices #FutureOfEurope

📢 REPORT | Engaging with Connecting Europe: 2017-2024 and Beyond Over the past seven years, the Connecting Europe initiative by the European Policy Centre has played a vital role in fostering dialogue between civil society and EU decision-makers. Amid rising nationalism, permacrises, and transformative societal challenges ranging from green and digital transitions to demographic shifts civil society's contribution to fostering understanding and informed policymaking has never been more critical. Key insights from the report include: 🔴 The importance of independent research and evidence-based policymaking in addressing global and European challenges, including the war in Ukraine and crises in the Middle East. 🔵 The value of connecting civil society organisations across borders to strengthen European dialogue and address shrinking spaces for civic engagement. ⚪ The role of initiatives like Connecting Europe in preparing for the EU’s green and digital transitions while navigating complex geopolitical shifts. Initiated by the European Policy Centre (EPC) and funded by Stiftung Mercator GmbH, Connecting Europe has become a cornerstone for transnational EU policy debates since its inception in 2017. Excited to share positive developments in #Belgium's development policy and Civil Society Organization (CSO) funding! 🌍 Their stable approach, coupled with a progressive co-financing program, prioritizes CSO autonomy. It's great to see CSOs retaining significant control over funding allocation, with decreasing concerns about instrumentalization. Additionally, Belgium's increased investment in global citizenship education sets a commendable example for other nations. Helsen, L., Huyse, H., Schulpen, L. W. M., & Pollet, I. (2024). Government funding of CSOs in a rapidly changing world: Evidence from six OECD-countries. The report summarizes the findings of a study on government funding (ODA) for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in six European countries (Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK), examining trends over the past five years. It highlights the impact of global crises such as COVID-19 and the Ukraine conflict, as well as shifts in development priorities and challenges to civic space.
