We believe that change is fast, more efficient and effective when the proponents are the individuals themselves. Development from the bottom-up is the way to go. This method of development is theoretically in effect but practically dormant in most parts of Africa. Can we, the individuals in a community, do the barest minimum we can do to make the a little change for the better in our various communities? The Community CleanUp Initiative is not only about advocating for sanitation but being the catalysts of a drastic and holistic change in Africa.

Stray thoughts that flowed through my ears and then whirled in my head as we discussed weaving more #networks of networks committed to supporting a just, sustainable, democratically/locally-owned and operated regional food system grounded in #trust: 🔆 organizing around #food really does create capacity for other conversations to happen (literally as in breaking bread together but also food truly does connect to everything else!); 🔆 there is a massive gap around information #flows in/and around networks in our region (meaning we need more crucial information moving in care-fully curated ways, and we need more people understanding networks and their roles in them!); 🔆 we have look to create more space, and more diverse space, in "the middle" (for example, between state government and local communities); that will be how #change happens ... 🔆 for example, we might use the existing model in Vermont of stipending temporary work to move massive resources through state systems (connects to the idea of rotational #sharedleadership) ... 🔆 we need to help build up "community soil" so we can get more resources to the roots in a way that does not deluge them; 🔆 to this end, ⬆ we might build on existing #communityorganizing infrastructure to disburse information and funding ... 🔆 ... and The New England Grassroots Fund is a model in our region for “regranting” and peer review processes that others could adopt in local #communities; 🔆 AND we have to help "backbone organizations" of different kinds understand how to build #trust/#relationship and then what to do with them (or THAT you can do things with them! - this would truly be a “game changer"

https://lnkd.in/gx4YDktV transformation starts with each individual.
I have this argument with people who think anything other than massive structural and population level change is a waste of time. It's not, and without individual and neighbourhood action we wither. We always need multilevel, networked action, and to sustain any of it we need loving, giving relationships in our own daily lives and communities.

Meet Innocent, the leader of the ABCD group in Akayange. Asset-Based Community Development focuses on identifying and utilizing the unique strengths and assets within a community to foster sustainable development. These efforts are local-led and produce lasting positive change. Last time we checked in with this group, they had yielded an impressive 150% return on investment from their mushroom farm and secured land to start a new initiative of cultivating maize. Innocent recently gave us an update, sharing that the group opened a bank account through a savings group and is in the process of gaining cooperative certifications. Their vision is to provide insurance coverage for community members in need. Kinvest has supported the Akayange group by offering on-site support and coaching. We look forward to witnessing the next chapter in this group’s journey. #ABCD #businessschool #education #savingsgroups #marketinnovations #markethubs #ruraltransportation #cleanwater #leaderdevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #accelerate #Kinvest #Impact #Rwanda

Strategic importantance of community participation: :Based on the above mentioned points and my diverse experiences, from grassroot level community involvement to international exposure, I have formulated a definition of community participation as under: "Community participation and involvement begins at the grassroots level, where individuals come together to form strong, supportive networks, just like a plant requires soil, water, air, and light to grow, community participation necessitates nourishment and patience with mutual respect to flourish and become a powerful force for change."" #AKF #AKDN #AKRSP #VillageOrganisation #Socialcapital #Education #Livelihoods #Health #Climatechange #Diversification #Publicpolicy #SupportOrganisation #Ecosystemofsupport https://lnkd.in/ehbP7B4E
