Liza Tetley and Nishant Kumar of Bloomberg write about the awkward underperformance of #ucits #hedgefunds relative to the real thing. The cold reality is that most hedge fund strategies do not work well within highly regulated vehicles. As the guys who predicted these issues as far back as 2013 (with Michael Oliver Weinberg, CFA on multi-manager funds), the only strategy we've found that can plausibly outperform actual hedge funds within these constraints, with daily liquidity and no asset-liability mismatch, is to seek to replicate the pre-fee performance of pools of actual hedge funds. The simple (elegant?) idea is that if you can replicate 80-90% of pre-fee performance efficiently and charge less, you tend to outperform expensive hedge funds over time. Fee disintermediation can be the purest form of alpha. Of course, it works in limited circumstances: you cannot replicate an imaginary portfolio of Millenium Capital Management and Citadel, nor should you try. But our job is to know this. And another new entrant onto the commodities scene: "Bobby Jain’s New Hedge Fund Plans Major Push Into Commodities.. Jain Global LLC is on track to be one of the biggest hedge fund launches in years, and its push into energy and metals is the latest example of how investors are piling back into raw materials.... The hedge fund’s commodities aim is another example of how big multistrategy firms are looking to replicate the success of Citadel in building out commodity-trading businesses with exposure to physical markets. Jain’s foray into the sector is being led by former Macquarie Group veteran David Hochberg, with about 10 commodities portfolio managers hired so far. The Yinghua Awards (Overseas) 2024, organized by China Fund News and aiming to recognize excellent overseas funds with significant exposure to Chinese assets, was unveiled on Nov 21st. The Yinghua Awards (Overseas) 2024 features two categories: Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds. The overseas mutual funds evaluation was based on Morningstar Direct data, while the overseas hedge funds evaluation received technical support from Sinolink Securities.  After careful deliberation on evaluation criteria, methods of data collection, and quantitative and qualitative assessments, 26 mutual fund products and 17 hedge fund products stood out as winners of the Yinghua Awards.
