Last year Sama published a research exploring the links between the arts, cultural organizing and social change in the MENA region. ⭐️ Art has long served as a powerful form of resistance, offering individuals and communities a way to express dissent, challenge oppression, and inspire social change. In a rapidly changing, interconnected, and increasingly unequal world, the role of art as a form of activism has never been more crucial. It not only amplifies marginalized voices but also enables cross-cultural solidarity, emotional engagement, and systemic critique. Whether through digital art, spoken word, music, theater or dance, art continues to mobilize people toward collective action, challenge oppressive structures, and imagine new and just futures. 🎭🎨 To read the full study: https://lnkd.in/dz9iy2R9 Photo credit: El Funoun Dance Troupe #art #socialchange #culture #freedom

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 : 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬" 💯 An artist, in the context of subsaharan africa, is often defined as an individual who engages in creative expression through various mediums, including #visualarts , music, dance, and litterature. This definition transcends mere technical skill; it encompasses the ability to convey #culturalnarratives , #societalissues , and personal experiences. In many subsaharan cultures, artists are revered as #custodians of heritage and tradition, playing a crucial role in the preservation and evolution of their communities. 💯 The perception of the artist is deeply intertwined with the social-political landscape, where they are seen as both influencers and commentators, capable of challenging norms and inspiring change. 💯 The impact of #acculturation and interracial on the #africanartist of the 21st century is multifaceted, yielding both positive and negative consequences. On one hand, exposure to global artistic movements and collaborations has enriched the #creativelandscape , fostering innovation and #crossculturaldialogue . Artists are now able to access broader platforms, allowing their work to reach international audiences. Conversely, this interaction can lead to the dilution of #traditionalpractices and the commodification of cultural expressions, risking the authencity of #indigenous art forms. It is imperative for contemporary african artists to navigate these complexities with a focus on preserving their #culturalintegrity while embracing the opportunities that globalisation presents. 💯 Happy #InternationalArtistDay for every artist on this platform #linkedin.

PICASSO'S NAPKIN STORY Ever heard the story of Picasso and the napkin? Legend has it that Picasso was at a Paris market when an admirer approached and asked if he could do a quick sketch on a paper napkin for her. Picasso politely agreed, promptly created a drawing, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a million Francs. The lady was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you five minutes to draw this!” “No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years to draw this in five minutes. I am sure many artists can relate to this story. Now let’s explore some incredible art here in Lubumbashi, For those asking about opportunities in DRC, take note: when we consider a country, it’s not just about what we can bring, but also what we can take from it to support local growth. Let’s help DRC artists find stronger markets and consistent business for their work—it’s a way to create jobs and honor local talent. Back in 2011, I spent a month here at the Park Hotel, right across from this market, where I deepened my understanding of Congolese and Indian cultures. Art is a powerful way to learn about each other’s stories. To everyone in the diaspora, make time to visit African countries and explore the art—it’s an opportunity worth taking! #DRC #AfricanArt #Lubumbashi #ExploreAfrica #CulturalExchange #SupportLocalArt #Diaspora Creative Africa Nexus - CANEX African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat #afcfta #iatf2025

My MA dissertation, approached from a Saudi perspective, explores the works of female artists Manal Al Dowayan and Filwa Nazer. It examines how significant cultural shifts have influenced their perspectives and artistic expressions over the past few decades. Through an analysis of their nuanced critiques of patriarchal structures, the research delves into the complexities of Saudi femininity and the ongoing negotiation of cultural boundaries. This study contributes to the discourse on art, feminism, and cultural identity within a rapidly evolving Saudi context, highlighting the rich intersections of gender and artistic expression.

The Power of The Arts Art has the unique quality of transcending barriers as its creative expression evokes strong emotions which beg for a change in perspective because you cannot stay stagnant. The Arts fire the senses, whilst inviting a connection with the medium itself. No matter if that medium is written, spoken, visual, physical, tactile or spiritual. Art takes us back in time or invites us to look beyond the boundaries, whether they are self imposed or instituted by others. This #curiosity, #Creativity and questioning, leads to greater understanding thus breaking down the barriers which restrict #innovation. The Power of The Arts is found in the enhanced #Value to the individual, community and society at large through positive health and wellness, embracing diversity and inclusion, capturing change and offering #Economic opportunities in order to unify all of us as #Humanity. 💬 "𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙗𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙝𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙?" Art has a profound ability to raise awareness, evoke empathy, and inspire action. From paintings and sculptures to digital media and performances, artists around the globe are using their creativity to shed light on the plight of trafficking victims and advocate for their freedom and rights. 🖼️ The visual accompanying this post is a mural created during the International Anti-Human Trafficking Conclave in Siliguri, featuring Sangeeta, a trafficking survivor, symbolizing resilience and hope. Underneath the beauty lies a tragic reality: this area is a hub for human trafficking in South Asia. Tens of thousands are taken from their communities each year, sold into slavery, forced marriages, or labor by international crime rings. Combatting this crisis requires the dedication of NGOs, law enforcement, governments, and the international community. On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, let's harness the transformative power of art to combat this grave injustice. Support art therapy for survivors, attend exhibitions, and share artworks that inspire change. 💗 #myCulture #WorldDayAgainstTraffickingInPersons #ArtForChange #EndTrafficking #HumanRights #CreativeResistance #FreedomThroughArt
