Last week I had the opportunity to participate in the Latinas in Tech Summit in San Francisco. There were so many interesting topics that it would be hard to try and summarize it all here. Instead, I’ll leave you with a key insight that ties to a concept that I have thought deeply about since I was an engineering student at Duke University. It’s the concept of how 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 inspired by Dr. Adrian Bejan's Constructal Law: “𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑎 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑒-𝑠𝑖𝑧𝑒 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 (𝑡𝑜 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒), 𝑖𝑡 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑒𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑎 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑖𝑡.” Whether we are talking about networking, mentorship or sponsorship, what we are really trying to do is create more 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 to reach certain groups. Once we expand and diversify our networks, our access to information and opportunities also expand. Though it’s important for us to have access to leaders who “look like us”, it’s equally important to have access to people, regardless of their background, who are willing to mentor and open up doors along the way. After all, if only Latinas mentor Latinas, then we are confined to what this network has access and visibility into. To me, this insight further strengthens my belief that diversity and allyship enable us to flourish by increasing access to information flows, in the same way that well-being also improves access to information flow through psychological safety where people feel safe to share their diverse thoughts. Whether we are talking about DEI or well-being or any other initiative that aims at improving our connectivity and sense of belonging, where there is 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, there is 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. #DiversityandInclusion #technology #engineering #LatinasinTech
