🌍 Exciting news from the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly! Member States have endorsed a powerful resolution to ensure regular and meaningful social participation in health decision-making. As someone who has been working in community oriented approaches to health care for the past decade - it is wonderful to see that commitment to individuals, communities, and civil society having a say in health policies at every level. I cannot wait to contribute to this global conversation and action agenda. I am fortunate to have two roles where I can focus my efforts to add value - VP of SSOs with the World Stroke Organization and Senior Associate with the International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC). The next steps outlined in the : Regular participatory mechanisms - Strengthened public and civil society engagement - Inclusive participation for all, especially the vulnerable - Policy adoption from these processes - Sustained resources and supportive policies - Research and evaluation - were on our to do lists already. 💪 As noted by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, highlights this as a game-changer, especially for vulnerable and marginalized groups, fostering trust and equity in our health systems. WHO is ready to support countries in this transformative journey towards responsive, equitable, and resilient health systems. WHO CC for VBD and NTDs at James Cook University announced as a Commission on Lancet Commission on People Centred Care - a group of 34 multidisciplinary experts, competitively chosen from a global call, from around the world representing people with lived experiences, health care providers, policymakers, academic researchers, civil society organizers, and private sector leaders. The Public Health Paradox: Are We Really Making an Impact?🩺 I’m currently attending the International Public Health Conference, where the brightest minds gather to discuss global health. But here’s a challenging question: With all the conferences, research, and funding—why is there still a widening gap in health equity? Despite our advancements, communities worldwide are still struggling with preventable diseases, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to basic resources. Are we focusing on the wrong priorities? Or is the public health field inadvertently prioritizing theoretical debates over practical solutions? Are we more interested in publishing research than implementing actionable solutions? This is not just a conference question—it’s a call to action for all of us in public health. These past two days I've had the opportunity to learn about Inequity Measurement in Canadian Health Systems from a diverse range of industry experts. This workshop series put on by Institute for Better Health - Trillium Health Partners, allowed participants to: 1) Gain insight into methods being used or considered within other health systems 2) Share how equity data is collected, shared & used to address & reduce inequities 3) Discussed systematic integration of inequity measures to ensure equity is a key component of decision making & service design across health systems. Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly Update 🌍✨ The first-ever resolution on social participation for primary health care has been approved by Member States. This is a significant milestone that empowers people, communities, and civil society to have a stronger voice in shaping decisions that impact their health and well-being. The resolution is a crucial step in addressing health inequities and rebuilding trust in health systems, especially in the face of unprecedented challenges like climate change, conflicts, and pandemic threats. 🤝🌱 Research has shown the transformative power of social participation in fostering trust, advancing equity, and aligning healthcare with people's lived experiences. By engaging in two-way dialogues between governments and the communities they serve, we can develop health policies, strategies, and services that are more responsive to the needs of vulnerable and marginalised populations. 🗣️💡 The implementation of this resolution will involve establishing regular and sustained participatory mechanisms such as dialogues and consultations, ensuring policies reflect the recommendations generated from these processes. 🤝📋 As patient advocates, we celebrate this progress and are determined to make a real difference in promoting social participation for better health outcomes. The Importance of Categorizing Micro Interventions in Public Health Implementation Research Micro interventions small, targeted actions to address specific health issues are key in public health. Categorizing them is crucial in implementation research for several reasons: 1.Improved Precision: Helps tailor interventions (e.g., behavioral, policy, or educational) to specific health challenges for more effective outcomes. 2.Replicability & Scaling: Categorization aids in documenting what works and creating blueprints for scaling successful interventions to larger populations. 3.Systematic Evaluation: Grouping similar interventions facilitates comparison and meta-analysis, leading to stronger evidence for best practices. 4.Addressing Complex Needs: Understanding how different interventions complement each other allows for holistic, integrated approaches to tackling multifaceted health challenges. 5.Resource Optimization: Helps prioritize cost-effective interventions, ensuring efficient use of limited resources. 6.Supporting Policy: Clear categorization provides evidence-based options for policymakers, aiding decision-making and increasing the likelihood of securing support for effective programs. 7.Customization to Context: Categorization allows interventions to be adapted to local socio-cultural and economic contexts, ensuring relevance and effectiveness. Ranking 44th out of 50 in valuing health should serve as a clear call to prioritize public health above partisan agendas. From my perspective, there is a critical need for concerted efforts on three fronts before we can even start to address the priorities identified by this dashboard. Firstly, we need to invest in scholarships and robust financial support systems to cultivate the next generation of public health leaders in Ohio - I'd argue we also need to foster career paths that retain our skilled public health talent in Ohio. Secondly, sustainable funding for public health infrastructure, especially in underserved rural areas, is non-negotiable. The Dashboard reveals glaring gaps in healthcare spending and population health outcomes, particularly in regions with limited financial resources. Addressing these disparities requires increased and equitable distribution of resources (not just in Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Hamilton counties) and a commitment to bolstering infrastructure where it's much needed. Lastly, we have to work toward depoliticizing public health. I'll never forget the keynote that Dr. Lotetta Ross delivered at APHA in 2023. Dr. Ross aptly questioned in their keynote, "Why are so many people angry at us, for trying to save their lives"? We can do better, Ohio deserves better.
