#SamvadaArticle Assad’s Downfall and the Fragile Dynamics of Power in the Middle East writes Anjali Singh As rebel forces surged into the capital, Damascus, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule came to an end in a historic turn of events. Daraa, which was once the epicentre of peaceful protests against Assad’s regime, became the centre of Syria’s violent uprising, which has killed over 500,000 people and displaced millions more. The regime’s fundamental vulnerability was shown when Assad’s forces were unable to stop the insurgents’ quick successes, despite long-standing assistance from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. The Assad regime’s demise challenges the realist theory of state power and signifies a shift in international relations. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gDHh9Tpy

DPM&FM Ayman Safadi in an interview with Morning Joe, at MSNBC, today: - We need to focus on the real issue, which is the ongoing war on #Gaza, the absence of political horizons for peace, and immediately create a credible, irreversible path towards solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. - Netanyahu shouldn’t be allowed to impose his agenda of war on all of us. - The #two_state solution is the only answer to the conflict. - We will never allow Israel or Iran to turn #Jordan into a battleground, and we will defend our sovereignty and the safety of our people.

From Paul Larudee at FPM News: Some of you are probably aware of the initiative below, which provides powers rarely invoked by the UN, and which cannot be vetoed. In principle, it can even empower the use of peacekeeping forces to be used by willing countries, but the only time that happened, the GA United for Peace resolution was sufficient by itself for the Security Council to agree to send forces in 1956, without having to override a veto. As with the ICJ rulings, the difficulty is with the implementation. What countries would be willing to send troops to end the genocide, and would those countries most likely be ones considered hostile to the US and the West, and therefore set off a major world war? I consider that unlikely, but only because such countries will not send troops in the first place. In practical terms, if the most powerful nations do not agree on the implementation, there will be none (except by heroic Yemen). Because of this, Israel and the US can simply ignore United for Peace actions. Nevertheless, there is no harm in invoking the procedure, and we never know what might result from it.

The collective West’s support of the genocide is deliberate and calculated. This is Chris Hedges’ analysis: “The moral Universe has now been turned upside down. Those of us who oppose genocide are accused of advocating it. Those who carry out genocide are said to have the right to defend themselves. Vetoing ceasefires and providing 2000 pound bombs to Israel is the road to peace. Refusing to negotiate with free the hostages. Carrying out genocide in Gaza is a way to deradicalize Palestinians.” “None of this makes sense.” “If the genocide in Gaza is not halted, it will presage a new world order. It will be a world where nations with vast bureaucratic structures and technologically advanced military systems, carry out in public view, massive killing projects.” “The industrialised nations, fearful of global chaos are sending an ominous message to the Global South and anyone who might think of revolt:” “‘We will kill you without restraint, and no one will stop us. One day you will all be Palestinians.’” Source: https://lnkd.in/dm9-aU-Z

Middle East War, I can’t help thinking that no peace between Israel and the various terrorista groups will be possible without the recognition of Israel by Iran. Recognition is the key that could open up negotiations over State borders for Palestine and Israel. Having said that how can we bring this to bear on the regime in Iran? How can we expect every Palestinian to forgive Israel over the slaughter of 10’s of thousands of innocent people in their hunt for Hamas and Hezbollah?

OPINION: On May 23, the UN is expected to take up a draft resolution to create an International Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Srebrenica massacre of 1995. But while the sponsors of this resolution argue that this is an important step on the path to post-conflict reconciliation, alas, it’s more likely to sow further division in the Balkans.
