🟥 Changes in UK Policy on granting Leave to Trafficking Survivors A recent report by Free Movement highlights significant changes to the UK UK Home Office's policy on granting leave to remain for survivors of trafficking who have received a positive conclusive grounds decision, the second and final stage of the trafficking identification process. While the new guidance attempts to improve the assessment of survivors' recovery needs, it still does not adequately address the psychological and physical barriers they face in accessing necessary support. This continues to create obstacles for survivors striving for safety and stability. As part the Santa Marta Group Strategic Goal 5, we advocate for reforms that prioritise the rights of survivors and align with international standards like the Council of Europe Convention on Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings. We stand with survivors and call for policies that truly support their recovery. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eSikUQ5c

The second objective in our #GeneralElection manifesto calls for the next UK government to: 2️⃣ Reform children’s social care to support, safeguard and empower every child. Following the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care, NYAS remains concerned that the proposals lack urgency and ambition. We are calling for long term funding and increased support for the children’s social care sector.🔄 Read more about our manifesto here: https://bit.ly/3X2KGac

Proposition 1 approves the issuance of a $6.4-billion bond to support 10,000 treatment and housing beds and reconfigures a 20-year-old tax for mental health services to also fund treatment for drug addiction. The plan is essential to Gavin Newsom ’s strategy to address California’s homelesness crisis, an approach that departs from the liberal model of voluntary treatment to a more moderate stance of compelling people with severe mental illness and substance disorders into care. We need politicians in Canada who care more for the people rather than big donors. #treatment #recoveryispossible.

Our new 'Price of Safety' report reveals that it could cost a survivor around £50,000 to leave an abuser, based on the direct costs of fleeing and rebuilding a new life over the first year. The two biggest costs are likely to be legal fees for the family courts and housing. Whilst state support can mitigate those costs, there is still a funding gap of over £10,000, which is doubled for survivors who do not have recourse to public funds because of their immigration status. It is not an easy choice for survivors to leave and with such significant barriers, many will feel that this is not a choice they can even make, as they cannot afford to bridge the deficit they will face when they do. Although this might seem overwhelming, help is available, reach out to Women's Aid today if you need support. Survivors need the Government to commit to removing the obstacles they are facing, so they can live free from abuse. Read more about our Price of Safety report here: https://lnkd.in/eJ4BQMqQ For the Labour Government to meet its mission of halving VAWG over the next decade, they must enable survivors of domestic abuse to flee to safety and ‘stay fled’. This report from Women's Aid Federation of England is a must read for anyone who has ever asked themselves why victim/survivors of #domesticabuse 'just don't leave?!?'. Separating is incredibly dangerous and costly. This report finds that it can cost a victim/survivor up to £50,000 to leave an abuser, based on the direct costs of fleeing and rebuilding a new life. The main costs? #Housing and #LegalFees. Please take some time out of your day to read this incredible report and think about the changes that need to be made to protect women and children. #50000 #EconomicAbuse #FinancialAbuse #FreedomShouldntCost

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, and we honour the Survivors, their families, and communities. As we commemorate this day, we also turn our attention to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action—a comprehensive set of recommendations that urge governments, institutions, and individuals to address the legacy of residential schools and move toward reconciliation. The TRC's Calls to Action cover a range of areas including child welfare, education, language and culture, health, and justice. Where Are We Now? According to Indigenous Watchdog, as of September 1, 2024 36% of the 94 TRC Calls to Action are either not started or stalled. This reality shows that while some steps have been taken, much work remains. True reconciliation requires ongoing dedication and accountability from all sectors of society. This report from Women's Aid Federation of England breaks me.. https://lnkd.in/eNXEc9gG I see the after-effects of abuse on victim-Survivors every day and I can bear witness to the increasing legal cost debt that fleeing generates. Something needs to change in the legal aid arena. We need to see fast collaboration between the housing, legal and finance sector. Change is happening, but slowly; and at what cost to those fleeing? #economicabuse #justice #movingonfromabuse
