UKRI’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging (SSPP) Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, is delighted to have provided support for the launch today of a new ‘pre-fill’ reusable packaging trial by Ocado Retail, one of the partners in the Retail Coalition.   The Refill Coalition, comprising GoUnpackaged, Aldi UK, Ocado Retail, CHEP, Berry Global, Inc., Trade Fixtures, Eden UK, and DIGI Europe Ltd is one SSPP’s large-scale demonstrator projects, and is developing a new refill solution which is designed to become an industry standard for both in-store and home delivery refill. Recyclable PET wine bottle reduces both CO2 emissions and costs International packaging specialist ALPLA Group has launched a recyclable PET wine bottle, which is significantly lighter than conventional glass bottles, to reduce both CO2 emissions and costs. The 0.75-litre PET bottle weighs only 50 grams, about eight times less than its glass counterpart. The first bottles have already entered the Austrian wine market. This packaging solution, also available in a 1-litre version, can be made from recycled PET (rPET) and is compatible with existing filling lines. It is reported that the switch to plastic reduces CO2 emissions by 38% compared to glass bottles, with even greater reductions when using rPET. Alpla plans to produce several million units annually by 2025, using high-quality recycled material from its own recycling plants. The PET bottles, which are available in transparent or green, meet all quality requirements and are suitable for all types of wine. They are also up to 30% cheaper than glass bottles and work with conventional metal screw caps, ensuring flexibility for wine producers like the Austrian Wegenstein winery. 🌍𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐔 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 🌍 The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is set to bring significant changes, expanding the existing obligations for a broad range of products to be placed on the EU market: 1. 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻: From 12 August 2026, food packaging containing PFAS above specified limits will be prohibited. Heavy metal restrictions remain stringent. 2. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲-𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: By 1 January 2028, all packaging must be recyclable with specific design criteria. Packaging with a recyclability grade below 70% will not be considered recyclable. PET food packaging must contain 30% recycled content by 2030. From 1 January 2030, several types of single-use packaging, including certain SUP packaging in the HORECA sector, will be banned. Certain packaging types, like permeable tea and coffee bags, may need to be compostable under home-composting conditions. 3.  𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: By 1 January 2030, packaging must be reduced to the minimum necessary for functionality. Excessive packaging will be banned. 4. 𝗥𝗲-𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀: By 2029, deposit and return schemes for single-use plastic beverage bottles and metal containers must be established. The HORECA sector must offer reusable options by 2028. 5. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Manufacturers must maintain a Declaration of Conformity and technical documentation for 10 years for reusable packaging and 5 years for single-use packaging.
