📣 New guidance for NHS–Industry Partnerships has been launched today by The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) and NHS Confederation today at #NHSConfedExpo. The potential for greater partnership is enormous - particularly in primary care - and analysis shared by Will Browne from CF shows these programmes do improve patient outcomes and efficiency of care. The UK is falling behind as countries around the world introduce legislation to increase the transparency of payments made from the pharmaceutical industry to healthcare professionals. The ability of the pharmaceutical industry to influence healthcare policy and decision making through gifts and payments is well established in the UK and around the world. According to a recent The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) report, the UK is making some progress toward restoring its reputation as an attractive location for clinical trials. Despite strong competition, the UK moved up two spaces to be eighth for the number of phase III trials in global rankings. The total number of industry trials initiated in the UK also saw an increase, signalling a positive trend in the industry. But the journey is far from over. The report outlines six key areas for improvement, including investing in infrastructure, streamlining industry engagement, and establishing better transparency and accountability. The value of commercial clinical trials in rare diseases shouldn’t be understated. Industry-sponsored research provide treatment for people living with a rare condition including many where there are no licenced treatment at all. Trials often represent the only hope for patients in accessing therapies. In the UK, approximately 114 industry clinical trials for rare diseases occurred between 2016 and 2021, involving ~773 participants annually in phase 2 and 3 trials, with around 166 receiving novel treatments, which were likely to gain regulatory approval. However, the reality is that only a portion of EU-licensed medicines reach patients in England. We must do better in the UK for the rare disease community. We need an environment that supports the clinical and patient community in the UK to establish, and access clinical trials. And a system in which novel innovative medicines can get to the people who urgently need them. This is vital given the rapid progression of many rare diseases. #raredisease #clinicaltrials
