The future

Get ready for the world’s longest building. The 4000ft ‘Big Bend’ skyscraper proposed for New York. ✔️ A U-shaped skyscraper nicknamed ‘The Big Bend’ could radically change New York's skyline. The tower has been proposed by design studio Oiio for 57th Street, aka 'Billionaire's Row' in Manhattan. The unique shape of the tower which curves back round to the ground is viewed as a loophole to New York's zoning laws and 'air rights'  requirements for tall buildings. As it loops back to the ground it would be considerably cheaper than if it were 4,000ft in a traditional vertical ascent. Its design features an elevator which can go all the way round the u-shaped bend and "can travel in curves, horizontally and in continuous loops". If it were built it would be the tallest skyscraper in the Western hemisphere at 2,000ft. It is understood development partners and investors are currently being sought.

Skyscrapers have become pretty commonplace in modern times, and Skyscraper Day is our golden opportunity to appreciate these architectural marvels and feats of engineering. Skyscrapers grace our big cities with their bold presence and define our skylines with mighty buildings that literally seem to scrape the sky. But skyscrapers have only been around for about 130 years. The world’s first skyscraper was completed in 1885 in Chicago and it stood only 138 feet tall, a mere 10 stories that would not even count as a skyscraper today. But the name stuck, and initially any building that towered high over the surrounding structures was dubbed a skyscraper. Over time, our ability to engineer and construct skyscrapers improved drastically, and now a building must have at least 40 floors to be classified as a skyscraper at all. In crowded urban areas where land space is at a premium, skyscrapers allow us to build upwards rather than outwards, converting a single allotment of land area into 40 or more floors of potential living space. Some of the nicest parts of cities are the oldest. In Sydney Surrey Hills, in New York Brooklyn, the centre of Paris or Rome. It could be that this urban form was not optimised for cars, and so it is smaller, quirkier and more interesting to explore at walking speeds. I thought if it ain't broke don't fix it. So I spent 20 minutes modelling an old style city (the video is sped up) Of note: 1. jumping in and out of the flow scripting accelerates work substantially 2. I used Meshy to generate the cafe tables and cafe frontage 🤯 3. Using building 'patterns' is very helpful (these ones are based on those of Lisbon) 4. A trick I have started using frequently is using the segments of an exploded polygon to generate different facade types, it produces an extremely efficient and fine grained control of the building. You can, for example turn a single segment into two segments with an angle of 180 degrees. #urbanism #walkability #urbandesign

The proposed "Big Bend" in Manhattan, New York, plans to become the longest building in the world at a staggering 4,000ft in one continuous upside down U. The bizarre shaped building has been designed this way to find a clever cost solution to strict planning laws. The taller the skyscraper is the more expensive it is, so curving it is provides a unique loophole. Real-estate companies are capitalizing on a planning law that allows them to buy air rights from neighboring buildings. By implementing a curve design, the building can occupy more space in the sky without paying more for height. #architecturaldesign #supertall #architects

The refurbishment of council tower blocks in my neighbourhood comes with an interesting new feature – their names, in great big letters. 🏗 My first thought when I saw this was, great! This is going to make it much easier for me to: • learn the names of these buildings • find my way around • give other people directions Then I thought of the wider benefits for, say, delivery drivers, or people who are only living in the area temporarily. I could probably quibble about the choice to paint the name sideways. Personally, I don't find it difficult to read, but I can imagine others might.
