Ok, time for another sales leadership post, this really has more to do with looking for and finding a job. Recently I went through a job transition, thankfully I found an amazing role for an incredible company. But to get here I went through a ton of cr@p. Over a few months, I spoke to more recruiters, headhunters, hiring managers, etc. than I can count. Here is what I would recommend doing if you find yourself in this position. 1) Work your connections! NO ONE knows you better. 2) Write thank you notes immediately after speaking to the HM, recruiter, etc! 3) Follow up! If you wait for an email or phone call, it's not going to come! 4) Be humble but confident. You may be the best, but you are up against potentially hundreds or thousands of other candidates! 5) Be different. How can you stand out? Be creative in your approach! 6) Be patient. I rode the ups and downs of this process, and it's NOT EASY! Finally, a big shout out to those that helped me in this process! But recently, I came across one that truly took the cake! The job description spanned well over a page and, besides the usual expectations, included: Humble Competitive Willingness Experience with independently closed sales generating over $300k in revenue Good executive presence Extroverted Driven to influence It seemed like they used AI to compile a list of every positive trait imaginable. One might assume they were seeking a C-level executive with decades of experience running large companies. But that wasn’t the case at all. They were looking for a Director of Sales, offering a salary in the $150k range. Getting into a sales role is incredibly competitive right now. The most I've seen since we started Knit. There are more candidates than job opportunities. So if you’re looking, make sure to help yourself. That means: 1️⃣ Being able to explain 'why' you want to get a sales job. A hiring manager is unlikely to give you a position because you couldn’t find anything else so you thought “I’ll try sales” 2️⃣ Apply for roles, speak to people in roles, and pick up the phone. The phone is king right now. If you don’t answer your phone and try to communicate only by email then sales isn’t for you. 3️⃣ Keep going. I can’t think of anyone that we’ve placed who only applied for one job and got it. That doesn’t happen on the job hunt, and it certainly won’t happen when you’re in a role trying to find customers.
