Indonesia launched a program to provide free meals for nearly 90 million children and pregnant women. The initiative fulfills one of President Prabowo Subianto’s central campaign promises. Southeast Asia’s largest economy has set an ambitious goal to reduce poverty and become an advanced, high-income country by 2045. Indonesia formally joined the BRICS bloc of major emerging economies as a full member on Monday. The free food scheme, aimed at combating malnutrition in children, is seen as a cornerstone of that goal. High cost of the initiative, however — $4 billion for 2025 — has raised concerns about whether the nation can afford it.

Yetu Chama, an initiative supported by Retizen, is making a profound difference in the lives of women entrepreneurs and farmers in rural Kenya. With our support, 40 women have been empowered to thrive through various businesses, from farming and retailing food and clothes to running hotels and tailoring shops. In our mission to empower smallholder farmers across Africa, we're excited to share an exciting journey we embarked upon some months ago.  Partnership with Heifer International under the AYuTe Africa initiative, we're revolutionising the agriculture sector as we enable financial inclusion access for 125,000 smallholder farmers across 8 northern Nigerian states. In this documentary, our Co-founder, Ayodeji Arikawe, along with key stakeholders from Heifer International, Lekan Tobe, Ph.D., Country Director and Tajuddeen Abubakar, Access to Finance Manager, Heifer Nigeria as well as Busayo Onome-Oyetunji of Crust Microfinance Bank, our implementing partner, discuss how we are breaking barriers to financial access by opening bank accounts, issuing debit cards, and deploying POS operators in rural communities.  With this project we've been able to give underserved farmers access to the resources they need to boost productivity, access the right financial support, and thrive economically. As part of the success of this initiative, our commitment to gender inclusion means 40% of beneficiaries are women, further driving equitable growth. Saving groups help you navigate unforeseen events. In Uganda, Saving group was introduced by Care Uganda in the late 1990s in West Nile and later popularised by Plan Uganda in the districts of Luwero, Kamuli and Tororo. Its overall aim was/is to help those that are stuck at the bottom of the economic ladder to meet the basic needs of savings and credit and other needs. Increasingly, Saving groups and SACCOs have become sources of social support for members and the community at large. During weekly meetings, not only do members discuss money matters but they also share updates on going on in the community, how to address problems of farming, information concerning an emerging health outbreak among others matters that concern them as a whole. Most of the groups have also developed a social support mechanism, where people contribute to a special fund termed as (ebigwa bitalaze) in English “unforeseen circumstances”. This fund is always used to cater for any unforeseen occurrence for any of the members. For example, when a member of the group looses a loved one, that fund is used to assist the individual/family, when a member falls sick, so on and so forth!
