Did you know Shannon & Wilson owns and operates several Drones, or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs/UAVs), that we combine with our in-house photogrammetry and GIS capabilities to support rapid reconnaissance and site characterization? Our geologists routinely provide both reconnaissance level and detailed field mapping for localized project sites, as well as for corridor projects. We also employ mobile data collection tools, including our in-house drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and FAA-licensed pilots trained in acquisition of imagery for photogrammetric analysis.

With news on drone incursions at secure airbases it reminds me of the works we have done at UCL in the CUAV area. Can you tell the difference between the left and the right figure? Both images show the Micro-Doppler signature of small quadcopter drone. One has 0g payload and the other has 500g payload attached to it. Using ML techniques it is possible to differentiate the drones carrying payloads from those without which can be vital information when dealing with a swarm of adversarial drones.

With advancements in UAS technology, an evolving regulatory framework, and the increasing expertise of drone operators, the exaggerated claims often touted by drone maverics are giving way to genuine, successful long-term initiatives. The Gobierno de Navarra (Regional Government of Navarre (Spain) has carried out a new flight test involving manned and unmanned aircraft, specifically four drones, one from the Navarre delegation, and a Government of Navarre helicopter, simulating the search for a person who disappeared while walking the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela in the vicinity of Estella-Lizarra. This action is part of the European U-ELCOME project, in which Navarre participates along with other communities in Spain and regions of Italy and France to explore the use of drones in different areas.
