Ever felt like "social sector lingo" is a language of its own? 🤔 This abstractness can deter donors from giving to orgs that work on things like advocacy, research, and coalition building. But one of our new designs, pooled funds, might help donors give to this work. Read more about promoting equitable giving. Nonprofit leaders need to demonstrate why their organization is to be trusted. In today's landscape, larger nonprofits have special attention directed at them in the wake of major scandals in the sector. This operates very differently from the private sector where wrongdoing may lead consumers to a competitor, whereas negative news can dissuade donations altogether in the nonprofit space. That isn't to say people aren't donating, instead, they're looking for other ways to make their charitable donations by giving to smaller nonprofits or directly to people they already have prior relationships with. Thanks Nonprofit Quarterly. #Nonprofit #Finance #Justice

See the latest "Health of the US Nonprofit Sector Annual Review" by Independent Sector, a nonprofit membership organization that advocates for and tracks the health of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. Along with key findings related to data collection, economic impact, workforce trends, diversity, and advocacy efforts, the report shows that donor contributions to nonprofits fell by 10 percent from 2020 to 2021, marking the second consecutive year that donor contributions fell. That overall shortfall represents decreases from large and small donors; but the bulk of the decrease comes from donors giving below $500, who make up roughly 80 percent of all donations. #fundraisingstrategy #fundraisingsuccess #fundraisingideas #fundraisingtips #fundraisingtrends #nonprofitsector https://lnkd.in/gYZP9jyn

The original study served as a useful reference point—helping orgs wrap their heads around focusing fundraising efforts vs. diversifying… I’m thrilled we can deepen our knowledge with round two. “three especially important practices for nonprofits that want to raise the money to achieve significant scale: 1) Focus on concentration in one or two revenue categories. 2) Seek funding that is a natural match for your organization’s work. 3) Build dedicated capabilities and infrastructure to tap into the one or two revenue categories you’re focusing on.” 😉 Whether your nonprofit is large or small practice #3 is the secret sauce—get great at what you’re good at! #nonprofit #fundraising #philanthropy
If you are in the #nonprofit sector and have time to read only one article this summer, it should be this one. In a follow-up to a 2007 study, the authors from The Bridgespan Group highlight how successful, large ($50mm+) nonprofits scale. Spoiler alert --the really big ones raise the majority of their funds from one revenue source. As one of the nonprofit leaders interviewed put it: “Some time ago we figured out what we do really well and who would pay for it."

Most of my nonprofit clients are funded through a mix of philanthropy and earned revenue. That's common for many small and midsized nonprofits, but not all. 'Really big' nonprofits, however, defined by The Bridgespan Group in a longitudinal study as those earning more than $50mm in annual revenue, have scaled through a particular approach. Over 90% of “really big” nonprofits raised the bulk of their money from a single funder category - such as government, earned revenue, or corporate funders (the three biggest categories). They often diversify within that category, but not outside of the category. Successful large nonprofits have focused on getting really good at two things: 📌 Scaling their infrastructure to provide excellent programs and services 📌 Generating revenue through one 'natural match' funder category They know how to play to funders' strengths. These trends have continued and intensified over the 17 years studied by the Bridgespan research. One important change is that philanthropy grew as a category somewhat substantially, but still comes in as only the 4th largest category of revenue! (With individual giving - under $10K - as a distant 5th!) I think many would be surprised by this! 👀 Are you? Thanks Karen Berman for sharing this super interesting article.
