I can also relate all this with my career where every job after June 98 I added value to ... sustainable value beyond my tenure but I remember my tenure from 2002 to 2012 in #Balsara ( taken over by #Dabur) and #VST where my management showed trust , gave me independence ( within corporate governance and financial norms) to set up business for growth . I enjoyed it and the team enjoyed it . I am looking forward to such an environment where I can now make a difference to an entire company rather than a region or 2 regions . Today, on 3 December 2024, former India Cricketer and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar unveiled memorial of his late coach Shri. Ramakant Achrekar sir at Shivaji Park, Mumbai. While I was listening to the live broadcast on Sachin’s Instagram story, Sachin narrated a lot of anecdotes about him and his teammates with Achrekar sir. He emphasized that Achrekar sir was a very strict coach and was heavily disciplined. If something went wrong, he would provide “square-cuts” to the cheeks of the players. But at the same time, if someone would have played well, Achrekar sir would provide some money in the form of coins. Whether it would be Re.1 or Rs.2 or whatever. Achrekar sir would also provide tips at the end of the day after the players were all but tired. But the hunger from the players was unrelenting. I read an article that Achrekar sir literally coached a proper cricket team, who all went on to play for India at some stage. Today, I realize that: 1. A slap from the coach or manager in today’s modern world would be deemed as toxic and offensive work culture. Today, those who slap, always slap. 2. Achrekar sir never had that kind of attitude. He was a true disciplinarian and a well wisher. But today, there is a notion that people like getting appreciated, no matter what is done. Solution is to provide a constructive, polite feedback. Achrekar sir also preached polite constructive feedback. 3. Work culture existed at that time as well. Only today, the difference is that people have loudspeakers in the name of social media. Change will happen if constructive, polite feedback is shared and implemented. 4. Today no one has patience in the name of competition. Achrekar sir persisted with a set of players who had hunger, talent and positive attitude and hence he was a successful coach. What are your views on this? Share in comments below.
