5 greenwashing words I'd never use on a fashion brand's sustainability webpage. 🤢 And, if you don't have a sustainability page... Get on it! Whether you're a sustainable fashion brand or not, consumer demands, greenwashing directives, and new legislation (hello ESPR) mean dedicating a corner of your website to sustainability is increasingly non-negotiable. Transparency is a big deal. ✌️ And so is accidentally greenwashing your customers. Take it from me, your sustainability webpage is numero uno priority! (Especially if you want to avoid hefty fines.) I'm currently updating the sustainability page for a popular US activewear brand and it got me thinking about the words I avoid like the plague. Here's 5 greenwashy terms I'd never use: ❌ Green - Saying something is "green" means jack sh*t (unless you're describing the actual colour, then go wild). ❌ Environmentally friendly - Not bad, but you've got to tell your customers HOW. Give clear examples. ❌ Chemical-free - This is stupid because everything is a chemical - even water. Be specific. Are your products free from PFAs? BPA? Toxic dyes? Etc. ❌ Clean - If you're not talking about actual cleanliness, then it's kinda meaningless (Although, does anyone remember those mud-covered jeans Nordstrom was selling for $425 back in 2017?) ❌ Natural - When you get into the nitty-gritty, everything is derived from nature, even synthetic materials. What makes yours "natural"? Why is that better? Are you sensing a theme? Specificity. OR rather, the lack of it. The way policy, regulation and legislation are going, you cannot afford to be vague about your sustainability claims and credentials. But that doesn't mean you should avoid talking about them altogether. (Greenhushing is just as big of an issue as greenwashing - but more on that another day.) If you're unsure about what you should and shouldn't include on your sustainability page, I can help! 🙋🏻♀️ Book a free discovery call to learn how 🕺🏽: https://lnkd.in/evfcAfg7 #SustainableCopywriter #SustainableFashion #CircularFashion #Greenwashing #Sustainability

How some fast fashion brands love to shout about being "sustainable and ethical? 🤔 Yeah, we see you. 👀 Let’s be real, launching a new collection every week isn’t exactly what we call planet-friendly🌍 That's some serious greenwashing going on there. So, how fashion brands can avoid the greenwashing trap? 🧡 Prioritize quality over trends, investing in timeless, durable pieces to reduce waste and promote longevity in fashion. 🧡 Share information about your manufacturing processes and materials to build trust and authenticity. 🧡 Favor natural organic and recycled fibers like cotton, linen, and hemp to minimize environmental impact and support a more sustainable industry. In June 2023, the Dutch Consumer & Market Authority (ACM) updated their rules on sustainability claims. Following these rules helps you be honest about your sustainability efforts, build customer trust, avoid greenwashing, and protect your brand from fines. Ever noticed how fashion brands make a big fuss about their 'sustainability efforts,' but it feels like they're just checking a box? It's like they're saying, 'Look, we used one recycled fabric, aren't we eco-warriors now?' But here's the thing, it's not enough. We need real change, not just greenwashing. Brands should be diving deep into sustainable practices, from sourcing materials ethically to reducing waste throughout the supply chain. It's time for action, not just talk. Are you a fashion brand? An important player is entering the sustainable fashion conversation... GOVERNMENT. We are seeing government (mainly in the EU & US) starting to crack down on sustainability claims & supply chains. Most recently, the EU Green Claims Directive is taking aim at "greenwashing", holding brands to account for the sustainability efforts they market. Which is once again a reminder to be authentic & build sustainability in your organization from a meaningful place, not just buzzy words.

🌍💚 **Say No to Greenwashing: How to Spot Misleading Eco-Friendly Claims** 💚🌍 Have you ever come across vague or unverifiable claims promoting eco-friendly products? This marketing strategy, known as "greenwashing," is on the rise. The European Union has taken a closer look at common terms used to portray products as environmentally friendly – even when they're not. Shockingly, their research revealed that over 50% of the green claims studied were vague, deceptive, or unfounded. Greenwashing not only misleads consumers but also hampers genuine brands striving to make a real difference. It casts doubt on consumer confidence, making it harder for truly sustainable brands to stand out. To restore trust and leverage their authentic efforts, genuine brands must take proactive steps. At GATS, we are dedicated to empowering consumers to make informed fashion choices. We're focused on educating consumers on how to choose responsibly and dispose of fashion sensibly to prevent waste. Our mission is to make the textiles and fashion industry more circular and waste-free. Fashion brands, this is your opportunity to distinguish yourself from the greenwashers! Partner with GATS to enhance consumer awareness and transform your supply chain into a circular model with our expertise. By joining us, you'll not only boost your brand’s sustainability credentials but also contribute to a greener future, restoring consumer trust in genuinely eco-friendly products. #Greenwashing is a prevalent issue in the fashion industry, a sector known as one of the largest industrial polluters worldwide. The multi-trillion-dollar industry’s trend-driven, low-cost production models and the availability of numerous distribution options have led to mass consumption, significantly impacting consumer behavior. Why Strong Regulation and Definition Matter 1. #Transparency and #Accountability: Companies must back up eco-claims with evidence. Without it, they're guilty of greenwashing, making themselves look eco-friendly while polluting behind the scenes. 2. Preventing #Misleading Claims: Clear regulations prevent companies from making false sustainability claims. Definitions set standards for what qualifies as sustainable. 3. #Consumer #Trust and #Confidence: Official labels build trust. Consumers need confidence that products align with their values. 4. #Industry #Transformation: Regulations shift the industry toward sustainable practices. Companies invest in research, innovation, and responsible sourcing. 5. Avoiding Greenwashing: #Penalties discourage false claims. #SustainableFashion #SlowFashion #EcoFashion #EthicalFashion #FashionRevolution #FairTradeFashion #CircularFashion #SustainableStyle #ConsciousFashion #GreenFashio #OrganicClothing #VeganFashion #UpcycledFashion Are Brands Really Being Sustainable, or Greenwashing? 2024 is almost over and is still on track to surpass 2023 as the hottest year on record. 🥵 Earlier this year saw Earth Day’s annual theme focus on “Planet vs Plastics” to raise awareness about the billions of plastic waste items poisoning the ecosystem and driving up global temperatures. 🌎 🌡️ And while most of us are, naturally, on board with living somewhat sustainable lifestyles in exchange for a habitable planet, it can be tough to do so when you don’t know what the products you buy are made from. The problem is that many fast fashion brands have started greenwashing their business practices to fool you into shopping with them by embellishing their sustainability. To help you make more informed decisions, here is everything you as a shopper should know about fashion greenwashing. #sustainablefashion #climatechange #greenwashing #fastfashion #slowfashion #sustainableliving
