Bonang Mohale: Government needs to take tourism more seriously. For every one tourist, stats say that you create eight jobs. As a president, your job is not to condemn more people into social grants, but to create more jobs – and tourism can enable this. #BudgetSpeech2024 #SABudget2024

Last Week Thursday and Friday, I got a chance to represent Nomad Africa at the Sustainable Tourism Africa Summit in Mombasa. Honestly, if you are in the tourism sector this is a conference you don't want to miss. A convergence of all stakeholders, from the government institutions, private sector players, academia, youths and local community representatives all united for one purpose; to explore sustainable tourism pathways for resilient tourism futures. The enriching learning experiences spanned from the keynote address from Prof. Mary Gikungu, the Director of the National Museums of Kenya who delved into the crucial role of museums in sustainable tourism development to the exciting topic of quality standards in tourism operations by Prof Kihima of the Technical University of Kenya. My key takeaways from the summit: There is a stark difference between #tourismgrowth and #tourismdevelopment. While growth is an increase in numerical numbers, development refers to quality improvement. Numbers do not dictate the sustainability of your operations, you may have a smaller number of tourists who yield huge detrimental effects on the well-being of the destination so regulation is Key. More importantly, data is the baseline solution for all sustainability issues as presented by Weeva. We cannot solve what we don't know. There is a need to impart #adaptableskills to learners/ future tourism professionals to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice in the field, beautifully articulated by Prof. Marina Novelli on issues of curriculum development. Local communities are central to tourism development and they should be included in tourism policy and decision-making. There is a need for financing and support for youth-led enterprises and innovation. Research is crucial in identifying opportunities and areas of development for sustainable tourism, according to a presentation by the Tourism Research Institute. I wish I could share more but this is just the tip of the iceberg on the whole summit, pleased to have met Charlotte Beauvoisin from my online network, a travel podcaster of the "Diary of a Muzungu", an amazing work and tapped on her knowledge on utilizing digital platforms for business growth and development. A big shoutout to Judy Kepher-Gona for your consistency, persistence and commitment to organizing the STAS platform. Now I know and understand better. #sustainabletourism #tourismdevelopment Sustainable Travel & Tourism Africa

The UN Tourism released a 125-page guide to investing in the #Armenian tourism sector. If you’re thinking about investing, you can spot lots of interesting opportunities hidden between the lines 💙 These are 2 examples of insights I found in the guide and believe are very important and promising: 💡 The UAE ranked 1st for investors by net inflows in Armenia in 2023, with a total of USD 257.1 million. 💡 International visitor arrivals between 2018 and 2023 showed a growing interest from South and East Asia and the Pacific. For example, there were 19,000+ Chinese visitors and 34,000+ Indian visitors, compared to 27,000+ from Germany or France. As you read the guide, you'll find many insights that will lead you to ask yourself, 'How can I invest to capitalize on this opportunity?' Omar Durrah, Taher Alkhalaf, All Authors. Conference: 47th EBES Conference, At: Berlin, Germany Title: The Role of Community Based Tourism in Developing Human Resource. Abstract The tourism sector has always been crucial to any country's economic success. In the tourism industry, community-based tourism (CBT) is frequently cited as a requirement for attaining economic growth and long-term community development. If human resource quality concerns are addressed appropriately, CBT has the ability to improve community development and have a beneficial spillover impact on local communities' learning capacities and economic welfare. The current study aims to boost the community-based tourism industry in an effort to lower unemployment among Omani workers. The study's goal is to investigate how crucial community-based tourism is to the growth of local human resources and the economic prosperity of indigenous people. Additionally, the research seeks to determine and provide the right instruments for regional human resource development. The study would also look at how the industry of tourism uses the human resource development tools that have been established. The Sultanate of Oman's Dhofar region stands to gain greatly from Community Based Tourism (CBT) as a strategy for economic growth and human resource development. Policymakers, business owners, and communities at large can all benefit from a better awareness of the potential advantages and difficulties of CBT as well as how to apply it in their particular domains. Keywords׃ Community-Based Tourism, Human Resource Development, Tourism Sector, Oman.
