✨ I am heading to the field soon for a few weeks, and I am always humbled whenever I have a chance to reconnect with the daily realities my colleagues face in our public health work. 📍Being on the ground is a reality check for me, making sure the solutions I help my colleagues design are not only innovative but truly relevant to the contexts they work in. 🌍 While my passion for this work remains constant wherever I am, returning to the African continent, which holds such a special place in my heart, always renews my sense of purpose. 🔄 It’s a chance to reconnect, reflect, and regain the perspective that helps me move forward with fresh insights. #Grateful #PublicHealth #FieldWork #GlobalHealth #AfricanContinent #Innovation

🌍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 🩺 Having navigated #publichealth challenges in both low- and middle-income countries and Canada, I've seen how crucial #culturalcompetence is for effective health interventions. It’s not just about understanding different #cultures; It’s about integrating this understanding into every aspect of public health work. Sharpen your approach in #5 key areas: 𝟭. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 🌐 👉Knowing your audience is crucial. ✔️ Learn about different cultures and traditions. ✔️ Use culturally relevant materials. ✔️ Build trust by showing respect for cultural differences. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 👩⚕️👨⚕️ 👉Equip your team with the right skills. ✔️ Offer cultural competence training. ✔️ Encourage language learning. ✔️ Promote empathy and active listening. 𝟯. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 📝 👉Policies must reflect diversity. ✔️ Create guidelines that respect cultural differences. ✔️ Ensure equal access to health services. ✔️ Adapt health programs to meet diverse needs. 𝟰. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 📊 Data drives better decisions. ✔️ Collect data on health disparities. ✔️ Identify at-risk groups through data. ✔️ Tailor interventions based on data insights. 𝟱. 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 🤝 👉Community involvement is key. ✔️ Partner with local leaders and organizations. ✔️ Host community events to raise awareness. ✔️ Encourage feedback and adapt based on it. Think about this often: "𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆." If you enjoy this post, 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧 ♻ to share with your network. 📌 Follow Sadia A. 🌍 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. 🌍 When I first started working in global health, I thought understanding “a little bit” about different cultures would be enough. Wow was I wrong! 😅 As public health professionals, we work with diverse populations. And it quickly became clear to me that to truly make an impact, we need to dig much deeper. Here are a few ways I’ve found to continuously develop my cultural competence – lessons I’m still learning: ➡️ Ongoing education and training: Workshops, courses, and professional development focused on cultural awareness are key. I’ve gained so much from simply showing up to these learning spaces. ➡️ Self-reflection: Examining my own biases and assumptions is uncomfortable, but necessary. It’s humbling, but I’ve found that growth happens when you lean into the discomfort. ➡️ Hands-on experience: Volunteering or collaborating directly with diverse communities has taught me more than I ever imagined. Relationships are the real gold mine here. ➡️ Cross-cultural communication: Whether working with interpreters or navigating different cultural norms, being open, curious, and patient helps bridge gaps. ➡️ Advocating for culturally tailored services: It’s our responsibility to push for materials, services, and policies that are inclusive and culturally appropriate for all communities. Remember, cultural competence is never a box we can check off. It’s an ongoing process of learning and growth. What steps are you taking to enhance your cultural competence? 👇 Share your insights in the comments – I’d love to hear from you! While there is no shortage of breathtaking landscape or historical treasures in Peru’s Sacred Valley region, the same can’t be said for essential health services. Most of the 100,000 people living in the area must seek care in larger cities an hour or more away. But Duke senior Akhilesh Shivaramakrishnan's research project is part of a growing partnership with VIDAWASI Perú to expand access to health services in the remote region. https://lnkd.in/e5RW8uwh

🚨🌎🚨 You should know this if you work with international populations at home or abroad. The dichotomies of “first world vs third world” and “developed vs developing” countries are not synonymous or interchangeable. The words you use at work have more impact than you think, especially when attempting to divide global players into opposing teams. This short article has a great chart showing the origin and definition of the most common words used to divide up the world’s nations. It is a throwback to my undergrad International Relations 101 course, but just as important now as it was then. #internationalhealth #refugeehealth #communityhealth #migranthealth #internationaldevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #overseasworkers #expat #humanitarianworkers ##internationalrelations #unjobs #globalpolitics #wordsmatter #plainlanguage

Today Polaron Language Services had the pleasure of hosting our second Lunch and Learn, where we focused on effective dissemination strategies for health information. The significance of this topic cannot be overstated, especially when considering the challenges faced by multicultural and linguistically diverse communities in accessing vital health resources. Health information is powerful, but it only makes an impact when it reaches the right people at the right time. Unfortunately, many individuals from diverse backgrounds struggle to obtain the information they need due to language barriers, cultural differences, and systemic inequalities. We were honored to welcome our partners from Lung Foundation Australia ; Kerstin Greeneberg Brisbane. They shared valuable insights into their ongoing efforts to support diverse communities across Australia. One striking highlight during our session was CALD communities represent significant proportions across occupational lung diseases. This figure underscores the urgent need for culturally relevant and accessible health communication strategies. As we discussed various approaches to improve outreach, it became clear that collaboration is key. By working together, we can develop tailored communication strategies that resonate with diverse populations and ensure that everyone has the information they need to lead healthier lives. Our commitment to fostering inclusive health communication is stronger than ever. Let’s continue to collaborate and break down barriers to health information access, ensuring a healthier future for all. #HealthInformation #DisseminationStrategies #PolaronLanguageServices #LunchAndLearn #EffectiveCommunication #HealthLiteracy #LanguageServices #HealthEducation #InformationDissemination #October2024
