What would our communities look like if everyone had a seat at the table and a voice that was truly heard? In Aceh, a draft Qanun on disability rights is paving the way towards such a community. It is coming to life — not in meeting rooms alone, but in the voices of those who live its meaning every day. Three lessons emerge from the SKALA's opportunity to support the Aceh government on inclusive policymaking: 1. Policymakers need resources and skills to draft local legislation and regulations that align with the national policy framework. 2. To ensure that the Qanun can be implemented, Aceh’s policymakers actively build ownership of the policy instrument with all key stakeholders. 3. Input from persons with disabilities is essential to ensuring that the Qanun addresses their needs in Aceh’s unique local context. Disability inclusion is a crucial part of building a more equitable society. We all have a role to play in creating a world where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of their abilities. Here are some simple steps we can each take to promote disability inclusion in our communities: 💚 Educate ourselves: Take the time to learn about disability issues and the experiences of people with disabilities. This can help us understand the barriers they face and how we can be more inclusive. 💚 Challenge ableism: Speak out against ableism whenever you encounter it. Ableism is the discrimination or prejudice against people with disabilities, and it can take many forms. By challenging ableism, we can help create a more inclusive society. 💚 Support disability-led organisations: There are many organisations run by and for people with disabilities that are working to promote inclusion and equality. 💚 Consider supporting these organisations with your time, money, or other resources. 💚 Be an ally: If you don't have a disability yourself, you can still be an ally to people with disabilities. This means listening to their experiences, amplifying their voices, and advocating for their rights and needs. ❤️ Let's work together to create a more inclusive world for everyone! Attend our Interagency Meeting online the first Tuesday of the month and join the discussion. Today, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I want to reflect on the power of inclusion, resilience, and advocacy. My sister, Tanita is a constant source of inspiration to me. She embodies strength, determination, and joy in ways that remind me every day of the beauty and value of diverse abilities. Her journey has not been without challenges, especially in thr last year, but she has taught me that true strength lies in embracing who you are and showing up with courage...and of course the sass and confidence that she has in abundance! Organisations like Cedar are vital in creating a more inclusive world. They provide essential support and services that enable people with disabilities to thrive - whether community inclusion, opportunities to work and learn or access to services they need to succeed. Their commitment to breaking down barriers is not just inspiring, it’s transformative. This day is a reminder that disability is not a limitation, but society’s barriers are. We must continue to work toward a world where everyone, regardless of ability, is empowered to live life to the fullest. To my sister and to every person living with a disability, I celebrate you today and every day. Your voice, your spirit, and your contributions make this world richer. #InternationalDayofPersonswithDisabilities #Inclusion #DisabilityAwareness #CedarFoundation #Advocacy #StrengthInDiversity #FamilyMatters #BreakingBarriers

The United Nations has unveiled this year’s theme for International Day of People with Disabilities: “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.” This theme reflects the powerful slogan of the global disability rights movement: “Nothing About Us Without Us.” This call emphasizes the necessity of participation, representation, and inclusion, encouraging persons with disabilities to shape their own futures and contribute meaningfully to a more equitable society. On that note, we wanted to share the perspectives of some of our graduates at Melly’s and their employers. We’d love to see you to all today to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. But if you can’t make it in, consider something you could do today or any day to open a door to an opportunity for a person with a disability. It could be as simple as a conversation. #herestocelebratingallabilities #internationaldayofpeoplewithdisabilities #inclusionmatters #diversityincludesdisability #disability #disabilityawareness LCBO Nella Noakes
