🌊 Last week, the UN Ocean Decade Conference made waves in Barcelona under the motto: “The science we need for the ocean we want.” 🌍 It brought together 1,500 participants and 3,000 online attendees to review progress and set priorities. While the official venue was closed to the public, more than 120 parallel events, many of them open to the public, were organized throughout the week to engage society in protecting the ocean. 👉 The main goal of the conference was to create a new foundation to strengthen the sustainable management of the ocean and drive science-based innovation, from global to local, leaving no one behind. During the week, commitments were made to establish a Decade Collaborative Centre in Barcelona focusing on the blue economy, along with the launch of new Ocean Decade Programmes on sustainable ocean planning and management in Africa. These initiatives aim to bolster the development and dissemination of ocean science, advancing efforts to achieve the goals of the Ocean Decade and Sustainable Development Goal 14. However, the highlight 🌏 was the #BarcelonaStatement. Unveiled by Vidar Helgesen, it's a roadmap outlining priority actions for the Ocean Decade, including understanding marine pollution, sustainable food production, and climate-resilient ocean economy projects. 💙 Moreover, our CEO & founder, Patricia Puig, PhD, spoke at an Ocean Literacy event and participated in a workshop at the MPA Forum, emphasizing #oceanresponsibility.
