🍏 Agriculture and land use are responsible for ~60% of biodiversity loss & 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. By leveraging voluntary frameworks to set ambitious science-based targets, companies can fast-track the shift toward #NaturePositive #FoodSystems. More sustainable, equitable and resilient food systems will: 🪵 Halt deforestation 🌱 Protect and restore land 🧑🌾 Support a #JustTransition Erin Billman, Executive Director, #SBTN says: "Companies taking voluntary environmental action are raising corporate ambition levels and shaping future regulation. "Through #ScienceBasedTargets, food and agriculture companies can take holistic action across climate and nature, halting not just #deforestation but also the conversion of all natural lands in their supply chains, and driving the much-needed transformation of our food and land use practices." 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/exgmnE6q Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) We Mean Business Coalition WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development 👉 Learn more about science-based targets for nature: https://lnkd.in/enXegWGt #ForNature #FutureFit #Ag #FoodSector #FoodSystems #GlobalCommons #BiodiversityLoss #NatureLoss #Biodiversity #SystemChange

Agriculture and land-use-change emissions within company value chains account for nearly half of all global food system emissions (10 out of 21 GtCO2e in 2030), but as new #FutureFit reports highlight, the burden of implementing climate and nature solutions does not fall equitably across the value chain - nor will the benefits of implementation be shared by all. Companies must reassess how they engage with farmers and governments, otherwise they will struggle to deliver on urgent sustainability commitments. A critical first step is understanding the costs and benefits of the transition and creating transparency on the relative ability of different actors to contribute to the costs and share in the benefits. https://lnkd.in/eJNUFDEZ #FutureFit Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development We Mean Business Coalition A special thanks to the amazing team that worked on this! 🌾New research reveals that $205 billion a year is needed from the food sector to mitigate ½ of all global #FoodSystem emissions by 2030. $205 billion is less than 2% of the food sector’s projected annual revenues between 2025 and 2030, and would deliver a variety of co-benefits, including: 💵 On-farm savings 📈 Accelerated growth in new markets 🌾 Higher yields 🖇️ Increased supply chain resilience 🎯 Delivery on nature restoration targets The 2 new reports from the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and We Mean Business Coalition reveal that a critical challenge is that the burden of implementing climate mitigation solutions varies significantly depending on where actors sit along the value chain, with farmers currently facing the highest costs as a percentage of their revenues. In light of these inequities, report authors argue that companies should collaborate with farmers and other key value chain actors directly to distribute costs and risks of #ClimateAction and #NatureAction equitably throughout the food sector, and engage with policymakers to incentivize accelerated action. Erin Billman, Executive Director, #SBTN explains how setting #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature can also support holistic action in the food and land use sectors: "Companies taking voluntary environmental action are raising corporate ambition levels and shaping future regulation. "Through science-based targets, food and agriculture companies can take holistic action across climate and nature, halting not just deforestation but also the conversion of all natural lands in their supply chains, and driving the much-needed transformation of our food and land-use practises." It’s high time to make food and agriculture #FutureFit.🌱 🔗 Read the reports: https://lnkd.in/da8saWGA 👉 Learn more about science-based targets: https://lnkd.in/enXegWGt #NaturePositive #SafeAndJust #ScienceBased #NatureAndClimate #EcologicalEmergency #GlobalCommons

The challenge of feeding a growing global population while tackling agriculture's huge climate footprint is real—and it’s urgent. According to the FAO, global food production needs to increase by 60% by 2050, but agriculture and food systems already contribute a third of global greenhouse gases. So, how do we solve this paradox? The answer might lie in unlocking better ways to measure and verify sustainable practices on farms. To close this gap, we need to establish clear standards, streamline data management, and mobilize billions in private sector funding. In this report, BCG and Food Systems for the Future have outlined a roadmap to empower farmers to adopt climate-smart practices. These solutions pave the way for a resilient and sustainable agricultural future—one that benefits farmers, the environment, and our global food system. According to the FAO, global food production needs to increase by 60% by 2050, but agriculture and food systems already contribute a third of global greenhouse gases. Solving this paradox lies in unlocking better ways to measure and verify sustainable practices on farms, by developing practical measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MMRV) systems. By doing so, we will advance sustainable agriculture, unlock private capital, and accelerate change across the entire agrifood value chain.
