📑 New Report! With 1.4 billion people and a prosperous economy, #China is a key player in the global climate narrative. Recognizing this, the Chinese government has set ambitious #NetZero targets, committing to peak greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. While accelerating the shift towards clean energy is critical, new analysis from FOLU highlights the central role that healthy and sustainable #diets can and must play in meeting these goals. Using multiple climate models, the research compares the agricultural emissions projections of three consumption scenarios by 2050: 👉 Business-as-usual 👉 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines (CDG) 👉 Widespread adoption of the EAT Lancet Planetary Health Diet Critically, the analysis finds that: 📈 Agricultural emissions would reach 904 MtCO2e per year in China if consumption patterns continue on a business-as-usual track, up from a 2020 baseline of 806 MtCO2e. 🌽 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines would result in 46% fewer emissions than the business-as-usual scenario, aligning the agricultural sector with a 1.5C warming pathway. 🍐 Widespread adoption of the Eat Lancet Planetary Health Diet would see the biggest reduction agricultural emissions, resulting in a 51% drop compared to the business-as-usual consumption scenario. 🍚 China’s agricultural-source GHG emissions and associated mitigation potentials vary significantly by region –provinces with the highest emissions also offer the greatest mitigation potential. 🐖 In most provinces, and for China as a whole, reducing methane from livestock production would see the biggest impact Read the report for a deep-dive on key climate and nutrition interlinkages, and why healthy and sustainable diets are a key lever in delivering on the #ParisAgreement 👇 📖 Read report: https://lnkd.in/evurAVKq 💡 Read blog: https://lnkd.in/eBM_ZqMz #COP29 #HealthyDiets #SustainableDiets #EATLancet #FoodSystems #ClimateSolutions #Methane #MethaneEmissions #Agriculture -- WRI Food World Resources Institute Action On Food Food Tank EAT Gunhild Anker Stordalen WWF-China Renmin University of China International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Minpeng CHEN Nicklas Forsell Shenggen Fan Geist*Studio

One way to keep hope and inspiration alive is to focus on the progress being made on the food systems space. I thought it would be helpful to share an update on a project the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) Kenya team has been undertaking. Food waste is a serious challenge in Kenya, but it's also an opportunity waiting for action. 🌱 According to the 2022 Global Hunger Index, Kenya’s hunger score sits at 23.5, classified as "serious." This means 20-30% of Kenyans face significant food insecurity, and yet... 30% of the food produced goes to waste. That's enough food to feed around 14 million hungry Kenyans. The economic loss is staggering too—globally, the value of wasted food is around $1 trillion each year. In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, grains lost are worth more than the value of food aid received in the past decade. In Kenya, food loss and waste (FLW) represents about 10% of the GDP and has significant environmental impacts, including contributing to 21% of greenhouse gas emissions related to food waste. This is where action matters. FOLU Kenya is working on it. Our Coalition in Kenya has supported the development of a National Post-Harvest Management Strategy for Food Loss and Waste with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development to tackle FLW and have plans to support the implementation of the strategy. We are currently piloting the FLW protocol and guidelines to measure FLW in key value chains like mango, avocado, and banana. FOLU Kenya are also pushing for the redistribution of surplus food to ensure that what’s fit for consumption reaches those who need it most. 🚜🥭🍌 The goal? Cut food waste in Kenya by half by 2030 in line with SDG 12.3. Let's turn food loss into food found—every kilogram matters! Last October, #COP16 on Biodiversity took place in #Cali, Colombia, achieving key milestones such as the establishment of the Cali Fund and the announcement of ambitious national plans—including Colombia’s—to tackle biodiversity loss. Yet, critical challenges remain, particularly in resource mobilization, financial mechanisms, and monitoring of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). This week, Parties are gathering at the FAO headquarters in Rome to build consensus and take real action, securing reliable funding for biodiversity, ecosystems, and communities. As FOLU Colombia's Director highlights, "What happens in Rome will shape each country's ability to turn commitments into actions." As discussions unfold in Rome and throughout the year ahead, we must stay committed to: ✅ Integrated policies for resilience and impact – Addressing nature and climate together is essential for strong national commitments. Policies must be bold, actionable, and comprehensive to drive real change. ✅ Scaling up investment in nature and food systems – Transformative action requires significant resources to shift toward sustainable practices that deliver lasting impact. ✅ Inclusive decision-making – Farmers, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities hold invaluable knowledge for sustaining biodiversity and adapting to climate impacts. Their full participation is crucial for effective, equitable, and enduring solutions.

🌍 China’s food consumption patterns could shape the future of our planet. Did you know China accounts for over 25% of the global meat market? While the country’s traditional diet is plant-rich, growing demand for animal-based products drives significant environmental and health challenges. Facilitating a shift towards sustainable diets could: ✅ Contribute to China’s climate goals within the agricultural sector. ✅ Help reduce public health costs linked to obesity, type II diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Systemic change in food consumption is key to addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity, and improving public health globally. Explore more of these critical issues and how shifts in China’s diet can have planetary impacts in this insightful article from Ingredients Network. 🌱 👉 Read more here:https://lnkd.in/e8GucCxu 🫱🏼🫲🏽 Seth Cook #FOLU #Sustainability #ClimateAction #FoodSystems #GHGEmissions #China

🇩🇰 Denmark is taking bold steps by introducing a tax on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock production—a sector responsible for over one-quarter of the country's emissions. This groundbreaking measure is part of a comprehensive climate policy aimed at reducing nitrogen emissions and strengthening nature-based solutions to sequester carbon. 🌱 How will this impact farmers, food systems, and global climate goals? Explore the implications of Denmark's innovative approach and what it could mean for sustainable agriculture worldwide in this insightful article from the World Resources Institute: https://lnkd.in/gp4g3jfv

🌍 Food loss and waste costs the global economy over US$1 trillion, contributes to hunger, and is responsible for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 12% of methane emissions in agriculture. Reducing food loss and waste is a triple-win for humanity—benefiting the economy, the environment, and food security. Despite this, only 24 out of 151 countries have included food loss and waste in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), linking food systems with climate action. By prioritizing this critical step, nations can unlock new sources of funding, improve livelihoods, strengthen agricultural sectors, and significantly reduce climate emissions. Want to explore how countries can integrate food loss and waste into their NDCs to drive a triple-win for people and the planet? 🔗 Read more in the article here: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://lnkd.in/edy2V2Dr
