Einstein Chat: STEM in the Media! I recently connected with Michael Vargas, Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship (AEF) alumnus, during my Arizona visit. He shared insights on the Arizona STEM Acceleration Project (ASAP), an innovative initiative supporting K-12 educators with resources, funding, and hands-on STEM experiences. The popular belief is that the future generation will lead the future. You hear this at political rallies, in the news media, on social media, on living room couches, and in academic institutions. Yet, for that to be true and come to fruition, any nation and any people must focus on a competitive STEM education system. The latter is also a popular belief, and we also hear that in all the above-described situations. Draw a pyramid: just as it needs a solid base, competitive (this term is crucial) education requires a robust educational pipeline, starting from primary through higher education to excel, but also to prevent "brain drain." This underscores the need for a seamless educational pipeline where all levels work together. You can also argue that many of the most successful companies have been founded by college dropouts. That is very true, yet when you look at who they hired shortly after, in most of those firms, the engine is run by PhDs and equivalents from very competitive academic backgrounds. We have initiated the "Generation AI" program as a vision in action to create a dedicated pipeline of future AI researchers and innovators. 350 students from 15 high schools are already part of this promising start, with pioneering 10th graders currently taking final exams to understand how well they fare compared to others who did not have the opportunity to go through this program. In the end, the true differentiator is the competitiveness of the offering. High school programs are only the beginning. The limitations above and below must be addressed for the pipeline to be effective. Strengthening higher education programs is vital alongside primary and secondary education. By bolstering middle school education, we can increase the number of well-prepared students entering high school and, consequently, pursuing STEM careers. These challenges are not unique to Armenia. We must invest globally in a comprehensive STEM pipeline to unlock each country's full scientific advancement and technological innovation potential.

STEM South Carolina powered by Clemson! Through a new partnership with STEM Global Action, Clemson University’s Division of Community, Engagement, Belonging and Access, will launch the STEM South Carolina (STEM SC) initiative modeled after the successful STEM NOLA community-engagement model as part of the University’s mission to enhance educational access to all students for success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). “The opportunity for Clemson University to partner with STEM Global Action in this new initiative drives directly to the heart of Clemson’s mission and its strategic plan,” said Felicia Benton-Johnson, Clemson University vice president for diversity and inclusive excellence. “As we continue to evolve and develop the Division of Community, Engagement, Belonging and Access, we will continue to explore opportunities to engage audiences around the State of South Carolina.” South Carolina's population and economy are demonstrating record growth and are driven largely by: Advanced Manufacturing (automotive, tire and aerospace industries); Retail and Distribution (warehousing, ports and rail) and Healthcare; thus there's long-term need for to develop a skilled, technical and STEM literate workforce. A cornerstone of Clemson University’s strategic plan, Clemson Elevate, is to enrich lives through community outreach, creating pathways to educational and economic advancement for South Carolinians. Traditionally, Clemson has welcomed young minds to its campus to ignite their aspirations; now, with STEM SC, the university will bring the transformative power of higher education directly to schools and communities statewide. This initiative will be a collaborative effort, involving industry partners, Cooperative Extension, college leadership, and community stakeholders to ensure broad impact. These initiatives underscore Clemson’s commitment to nurturing a robust STEM ecosystem that cultivates talent, drives economic growth, and expands opportunities for students throughout the state. Why is it important to embed STEM young? 👶🏻🧪 STEM subjects create the inventors, leaders and innovators of tomorrow. So we feel it’s important to spark the interest for these subjects early on. It’s also the highest paying industry. A study by the World Economic Forum done in 2021 showed the top 25 university subjects by demand and pay are all STEM related subjects. The demand for STEM skills in jobs is very high. Our society is forever evolving rapidly, for example, climate change and technology. STEM subjects will give children the skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving, to deal with these challenges once they leave education. We believe introducing STEM early on can help to foster a life-long love of learning and help them perform better in school.
