You might feel nervous about getting a second opinion, but it’s very common in medicine! This is especially true after a big diagnosis like cancer or if your doctor suggests a major operation. Would you buy a car without considering all your options? You would do your homework and make sure you choose the best one for you. Just because two doctors disagree, that doesn’t mean one is right and one is wrong. Sometimes, you just need to make your decision based on things like how long it will take you to get better, what kind of ongoing care you might need, or how much it costs. "It is not unusual for a variety of diagnostic tests to be used by healthcare providers to identify elevated risks, diagnose certain conditions, inform the best treatment option, or even measure if a treatment is working. Above all, it is imperative that these tests’ performance and accuracy be well characterized before their results are used for important treatment decisions. Inaccurate or unreliable tests can have significant implications on healthcare cost, system burden, and #patient outcomes." Friends of Cancer Research's President & CEO Jeff Allen live at a Subcommittee on Health hearing titled "Evaluating Approaches to #Diagnostic Test Regulation and the Impact of FDA’s Proposed Rule." The new study on scalp cooling efficacy in Asian-predominant populations, found that 50% of patients achieved scalp cooling success. However, it also highlighted differences in success levels depending on the whether the chemotherapy regimen was based on taxanes, anthracyclines, or anthracyclines and cyclophosphamide. Whilst this shouldn’t deter clinicians from prescribing the ideal chemotherapy regimen, it allows them to better manage expectations when it comes to scalp cooling. #ChangingTheFaceOfCancer #ScalpCooling
