👏 Just released: the Evaluation Study on Excellent Science by the European Commission This study is a part of an interim evaluation of #HorizonEurope and assesses the contribution of HE to excellent science, focusing on the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (#MSCA) as well as other parts of Horizon Europe Pillar 1. 🥇 The MSCA remain the Horizon Europe programme which most stimulates the mobility of researchers across countries, both within the EU and beyond. Beyond this, the MSCA provide unique career development opportunities and prospects. 🔎 Some of the Key Findings: 👉 With an overall success rate of just 16% across its funding instruments, the MSCA are a highly attractive and competitive programme under Horizon Europe. 👉 The MSCA continue to successfully attract well-networked organisations with a long-standing tradition of scientific excellence in various fields of research. 👉 However, an additional 6 billion euros would be needed to fund all the unsuccessful high-quality proposals received under MSCA only in 2021 and 2022. This is nearly as much as the EUR 6.6 billion allocated to MSCA for the whole framework programme (2021-2027). 😿 Find out more and read the Executive Summary and Full Study report here: https://lnkd.in/g_zuvFyT

One of our latest publication 📣, Diana Matos, Paulo Cardoso and Etelvina Figueira, in collaboration with Salomé Almeida, explored strategies for controlling late wilt disease 🍄 caused by 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘥𝘪𝘴 in maize 🌽, which leads to yield losses of up to 70%. The use of agrochemicals may not be a long-term solution due to the fungus's increasing resistance, other strategies, such as biocontrol 🦠, help to control as well as to minimize environmental issues. This work is funded by CESAM - Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, derived from FCT/MCTES (UIDP/50017/2020 + UIDB/50017/2020 + LA/P/0094/2020) and a doctoral grant (10.54499/2020.07142.BD) awarded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). 🔬 Tradition Meets Innovation: Prof. Dr. Walter Leitner at the 133rd Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians (GDNÄ) meeting 🔬 Since its founding in 1822, the Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians (GDNÄ) has served as a prestigious forum for interdisciplinary scientific exchange in Germany, bringing together pioneers across fields to address key societal challenges. This tradition continued at the last GDNÄ meeting in Potsdam from September 12-15, 2024, with the theme “Science for Tomorrow’s World,” where leading minds discussed the future of science and technology. One of our FSC Speaker, Walter Leitner, Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Multidisziplinäre Naturwissenschaften and Professor at RWTH Aachen University, gave an inspiring presentation on the pivotal role of chemistry in the global energy transition. His talk explored innovative approaches to sustainable hydrogen and carbon utilization, highlighting advancements that make chemistry central to achieving a low-carbon future. Prof. Leitner's work exemplifies the GDNÄ’s mission of making science accessible and impactful. Whether you’re in policy, industry, or academia, Prof. Leitner’s insights underscore the importance of collaboration in the journey towards sustainable energy solutions.
