In 2021, I attempted the Polish NAWA Postdoctoral Fellowhsip with the support of a veteran forestry scientist, Prof. Andrzej Bobiec, but my application was unsuccessful. Despite the failed application, we became a long-term collaborator. Today, one of the fruits of our collaboration (Bringing back cattle grazing to abandoned farmlands. A lesson from silvopastoral ecological intensification in the landscape of the Carpathian foothills, SE Poland), which was rejected by more than seven journals over ~2.5 years, has been published by the OLDEST SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL OF FORESTRY, SYLWAN. Congratulations to Professor John Ralph who's been awarded the prestigious The Marcus Wallenberg Prize along with his collaborator Professor Wout Boerjan. John's work at Scion delivered groundbreaking insights on lignin. His science revealed the opportunities to turn lignin into high value biochemicals and biorefinery opportunities. This work was instrumental to the commercial, technology and innovation successes we see specifically in our High Value Biorefineries Portfolio today. This Portfolio - led by Stefan Hill - is enabling companies to manufacture high-value bioactive compounds (e.g. cosmeceuticals or nutraceuticals) and fine chemicals for export into global chemical supply chains. More reflections: I applied the lessons of my PhD in my impact work in community forestry in Africa, water resources in Spain and later in deforestation in South America, usually working with very talented GIS/remote sensing specialists. First, it’s worth clarifying what I mean by change agents their relation to impact. Impact is the way we understand and measure what has changed, it’s easier to pick out a specific habitat, species or resource, the target and see how that has changed, than to look at it more generally. When we measure impact we are comparing it either with data on how extensive or its state was at an earlier time (baseline) or at a time when we started measuring it (bench mark). That is not always easy to do, so a work around is to think about how your habitat, species or resource might be changed in the future if all went well with your planned intervention or project and work backwards to work out how you can arrive at the future you want to see. Another approach to impact measurement is to take an observation, more fish in the sea or less fish in the sea, have an idea or theory about what is causing that change and collect data that allows you to demonstrate that the world is working the way you think it is. I was delighted to share my research on the impact of climate change on forestry economy in Poland during the Forest Forum at the University of Rzeszów (14-15.04.2024). During the presentation, I introduced an intertemporal model conducting economic surplus analyses at the level of individual provinces. Preliminary results suggest a significant redistribution of surplus between wood consumers and producers. Furthermore, I highlighted the importance of wood imports from regions such as Russia and Scandinavian countries for domestic wood supply until 2100. #ClimateChange #EconomicAnalysis #ForestryManagement

During her second semester, WIDE Trust grant recipient Sophie Cusack explored courses in wood science and forest management.
