This Sunday (May 5th) is World Hand Hygiene Day! 👏 In preparation for this important event, we wanted to highlight the hygienic impact of thoroughly washing your hands. So, we decided to carry out an experiment at Klipspringer HQ using the A3 system – a methodology that detects all organic residue. The Referential Benchmarks for A3 testing vary depending on: ❇ The condition of the surface being tested ❇The type of ingredients/materials contacted on the surface ❇The risk management level of the area However, for the purpose of this experiment, a pass result was anything under 2000 RLU and a fail was anything over 4000 RLU. As you can see in the video, before a thorough handwash took place, the A3 system generated a value of 5707 RLU. Then, once a proper handwash had been carried out, the A3 system generated a pass result of 69 RLU. Such a dramatic difference really reinforces the importance of effective handwashing, especially at food production sites. Preventative Measures and Control Strategies to prevent food contamination Regardless of a food's origin, it's likely to pass through numerous 'hands' and come into contact with surfaces of all sorts by the time it reaches the consumer. Everything from cutting boards and diving knives to fridge handles and countertops can harbor bacteria and other microorganisms, many of which can make us sick if given the chance. Establishing and enforcing proper hygiene practices are essential to preventing food contamination and rising to the challenge of stricter regulatory limits, including zero tolerance, are some of the major concerns in the food industry. Commercial interest in improving process hygiene is largely due to the desire to reduce the risk of foodborne disease for the consumer. Consistency in the microbiological quality of foods during production is essential and, in the search for ways to achieve this, interest in rapid testing techniques for process line hygiene is growing. Contamination can happen at many points in the close of the product. Therefore, accurate and reliable tests for process plant hygiene are required.
