🌾 Rethinking Investment in Africa I recently attended an online startup investment session, and something caught my attention. When someone asked if they fund agricultural startups, the response was a straightforward "No, we only focus on tech." This made me pause. According to Africa Eats, over one-third of working-age Africans are in agriculture. In contrast, less than 2% of people in the Western world work in this sector. This raises an important question: Are we overlooking the real needs of Africa when it comes to funding? With such a significant part of our population in agriculture, shouldn't our investment strategies reflect this reality? Imagine the impact if we directed more resources into agriculture. We could empower millions, boost economic growth, and ensure food security. It’s time to rethink our approach and invest where it truly matters. What are your thoughts? The Clean Cooking Carbon Incubator (formerly the Venture Accelerator) is all about empowering small and medium-sized clean cooking businesses to thrive in carbon markets. Whether as project developers or suppliers of quality cookstoves, this initiative helps businesses gain the skills they need to unlock investment and scale impact. The data from the Clean Cooking Alliance’s Industry Snapshot Survey speaks volumes: 80-90% of investments in clean cooking are driven by carbon markets. Companies actively engaging in carbon projects are the ones attracting significant funding and driving growth. This means the entire sector must be primed—not only to participate in carbon markets but to benefit from them. The Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA)’s Carbon Finance Incubator prepares early-stage companies to engage strategically in carbon markets by providing learning opportunities, tailored technical assistance, expert mentorship, and connections to the broader clean cooking sector. Working with partners like Innohub, Mirepa Capital Ltd, Value For Women Ltd. and APA Corporation, CCA is helping clean cooking companies address constraints that impede them from participating in #carbonmarkets and increasing the visibility of these enterprises to carbon project developers, intermediaries, and carbon buyers.
