👑 His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima are to pay a state visit to Kenya, at the invitation of President William Ruto. The visit will take place from Tuesday 18 to Thursday 20 March 2025. 🤝 This first state visit to Kenya is a reaffirmation of the good relations and solid cooperation between our two countries. The Netherlands seeks to engage in new partnerships in various areas, and to deepen the countries’ existing ties. Kenya plays an increasingly influential role in the global arena. In addition, the Netherlands and Kenya maintain close economic relations, and both are major hubs and gateways to large regions. Within the UN and other international organisations, too, our two countries work together actively towards goals relating to democracy, the rule of law and independence of the judiciary. The global required investments to realize SDG6 range from USD$ 6.7 trillion by 2030 to USD$ 22.6 trillion by 2050. 2.2 billion people lack access to clean and safely managed water and at least 3.5 billion lack access to improved sanitation. To achieve the water, sanitation, and hygiene component of SDG6 by 2030, increased investments will need to reach USD$1.7 trillion. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that USD$ 960 billion of cap­ital investment is needed to expand and improve irrigation in 93 developing countries by 2050. In Kenya, with a population of 56 million people, at least 15 million lack access to clean and safe water, and 37 million lack access to improved sanitation and hygiene. An estimated USD$ 7.6 billion with a funding gap of USD$3.9 billion is needed to achieve the objectives under SDG6 for the country. The inaugural AVPA Conference 2024 (4th Nov to 6th Nov), brought together investors and innovative entrepreneurs in the impact investment ecosystem at the global, and regional levels, to discuss issues around innovative financing mechanisms to 'Catalyze Sustainable Growth'. I was privileged to represent KIFFWA - Kenya Innovative Finance Facility for Water at the conference and contributed to this important discussion during the 'East Africa - The Next of Ecosystem Development and Funding Concepts for WASH Enterprises' session. KIFFWA is an innovative financing mechanism seeded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya, to de-risk water infrastructure projects and businesses at the early stage and catalyze additional investments into the water sector. Over the last 6+years, KIFFWA has supported at least 9 initiatives across various sub-sectors and provided USD$ 4 million, catalyzed USD$ 7.5mn of development capital through its promoters, and seeks to catalyze 12X times, up to USD$ 142 mn for implementation/construction, and operational phases of these initiatives from a wide range of investors. With 3 main objectives of leverage, impact, and return on investment, KIFFWA has been able to overcome challenges in investing in the water sector, and created a robust pipeline of investable opportunities in the sector. The realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, cannot be fully achieved without adequate investments in the water sector in its entirety(i.e. access to drinking and domestic water, sanitation and hygiene, irrigation, water transport, etc.) and, as a result, we are always seeking partnerships for collaboration in this very important sector. At Kenya Climate Ventures (KCV), we're proud to play a pivotal role in catalyzing investments in Northern Kenya. With an investment of KES 70 million across five innovative portfolio companies, we've successfully raised follow-on capital of KES 180 million, showcasing the potential for sustainable growth in the region. Our approach focuses on providing patient capital through diverse financing instruments including straight debt, equity, convertible notes, and Islamic financing specifically designed to enhance access for SMEs in Northern Kenya. Northern Kenya comprises of 10 counties( Garissa, Isiolo, Lamu, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Tana River, Turkana, Wajir, and West Pokot) in the #ASAL and Semi-ASAL regions of Kenya. The region is characterized by unreliable rainfall, frequent and prolonged periods of drought, flooding, interethnic conflicts, and limited infrastructure(i.e. transport, water, and other social and economic amenities). The situation in Northern Kenya has led to its marginalization resulting in under-investment, under-development, and extreme poverty of its population. Despite these challenges, the region holds much potential and promise for investment in diverse sectors( livestock, agribusiness, energy, tourism etc) as it constitutes 80% of Kenya’s land mass, is home to some of Kenya’s largest and permanent water resources (Tana River, Turkwell River, L. Turkana), and has huge renewable energy potential – wind(for example the L.Turkana Wind Farm, the largest in Africa supplies at 17% of the Kenya’s installed main grid capacity), solar and hydropower.   The USAID through the USAID Kuza Program and the Impact for Northern Kenya Fund (INK Fund) held a two-day conference(29th Oct and 30th Oct) at the Carnivore Grounds, the Northern Kenya Impact Investment Conference 2024, that convened various stakeholders and sponsors drawn from the national and county governments, non-governmental organizations, international non-governmental organizations, development financial institutions and private sector, to deliberate on the exciting investment opportunities within the region. Under the theme, "Unveiling Opportunities: Redefining Northern Kenya as an Investable Destination" , conference speakers and exhibitors addressed and showcased #investment #opportunities in water, energy and agri-food systems in the ASALs.   KIFFWA - Kenya Innovative Finance Facility for Water participated at the conference in various forums, represented by its investment team, FA Grace Ndegwa  and Clement Wandera, FRM, and presented KIFFWA’s innovative intervention in #derisking water and #climateresilient initiatives at the early-stage using a #blendedfinance approach and #catalyzing additional investment into the #water and #climate sectors in Kenya. In today's society, communities play a critical role in holding organizations #accountable in their operations. It is no longer about profitability only but to be purpose driven. Businesses have a responsibility to positively #impact #communities and the #environment in which they operate in. Private finance is a #catalyst for businesses achieving these objectives. Our webinar today jointly organized by the KIFFWA - Kenya Innovative Finance Facility for Water and Kenya Climate Ventures (KCV), business leaders gave deep insights on unlocking private finance for sustainable development and community empowerment. KIFFWA's investee company -Hydrobox represented by Ward Goossenaerts and KCV's investee company - MACE FOODS LTD. represented by Margaret Komen, opened the stage with impressive impactful data on the projects they are undertaking. Their impact is not limited on just employment opportunities #sdg8 offered to the local communities but also on better healthcare #sdg3, quality education #sdg4, and improved infrastructure #sdg9 in their areas of operations. SMEs find great difficulties in #accessing finance and repaying the debt. This problem is compounded by currency disparities in that private funding is mostly in dollars while these organizations recoup their investments in shillings, mismatch in what investors want vs what these businesses offer, lack of tailor-made financing solutions and funds not being used for the intended purposes causing serious cash flow issues for the business. These problems were highlighted by Wanjohi Theuri, a seasoned Climate Finance Advisor at The Yok Consulting and Eddie Sembatya the CEO of Finding XY. Private companies have also taken steps in providing finances to their suppliers so that there are no supply gaps. At the forefront of this, is Unilever who were represented by Rasoa Wafula. Rasoa expounded how Unilever Kenya has supported organizations like Njoro Canning Factory Ltd to support farmers who grow some of their raw materials and introducing the "Emerge Supplier Accelerator Program" which promotes diversity in their supply chain by empowering women entrepreneurs and persons with disabilities to engage more. KIFFWA and KCV will continue shedding light on the different aspects of private finance especially in the water and climate change sectors through different forums.
