The latest numbers from the ONS on the growth in the UK population aged over 85 is truly incredible. This age group is forecast to grow at 3.8% each year for the next 20 years! To put that growth rate in context: ● UK house prices have, on average, increased by around 4.5% per year since 2000 ● Global passenger air travel has grown by 4.0% per year over the last 20 years ● The fastest growing country in the world has been Niger, West Africa - averaging 3.8% annual growth over the last 20 years Similar to the impact that house prices and low-cost air travel have had over the past 20 years, the impact from the increase in the elderly population over the next 20 years will also be significant. This heatmap video shows how the UK’s population has changed, and will continue to change, over time. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, in 1991 there were only six regions in the UK with 25% or more of the population aged 65+. By 2039, the forecast is for 236 UK regions to have a quarter or more of the population aged over 65.
