Why does my company need first aiders? 😫 This week i was delivering a x3 day Faw course to a group of staff from a very large UK food retailer. As I finished my days training I overhead a shout for a store first aider over the tannoy. A short time later the store manager entered my training room and asked if I could help as the store had no first aiders on duty. Of course I helped but as I made my way there i walked past three security staff at their booth closer than 50 m from where the casualty had fallen. I subsequently found out that two were not first aiders and the other ones certificate had run out. Now the person was okay but this could have gone very wrong for the company and store. After reading a post today it got me thinking about conflict management and understanding the stress response. I have been teaching for a number of years and at the start fear was real but I have learnt to control this. Yes, I still get nervous. How will the students react to my style of training? Will it be a buzzing course? This can make or break your day or days. Now I am my own boss and run my own company, my new challenge is finding businesses who will put their faith in my company to deliver training to them. I have now started to look at networking events and, oh my god has it gave me the fear. I went along to one recently and everyone was lovely but I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. I was way out of my comfort zone. I realised that this was a weakness in me and I started to research the etiquette of networking. I bought these two book which have personally helped me because I realised I'm not the only one who has the fear of networking. After reading these books the fear has not gone but I now have a strategy to work with. One of the nuggets for me is realising is not about getting sales, it's all in the name "networking" Building a relationship with companies who may need your assistance or know of someone who may need your expertise. I will now be going to more events and hopefully the butterflies will go and I can really start to enjoy this part of my business. I'm also realising how good linkedin is as a networking tool. Folks, if you have an AED in your business premises then please make sure that regular checks get carried out to make sure the battery is still working and the pads are in date. In the last month I have been in two premises in my local area, one being a restaurant and the other a bowling club. On both occasions I saw their defibs in a prominent position with flat batteries. I did point this out to management and hope it was an oversight. Today on Linkedin I saw an English police force highlighting their response to sudden cardiac arrest. The picture they have used shows a defib with a flat battery. It doesn't give me confidence. As we know an Aed is a life saving piece of equipment . Make sure it is rescue ready.
