You - yes, YOU - should apply! The applications for the 2025 class of the Presidential Leadership Scholars program are now open. 🗓️ I say this every year and inevitably some number of friends, colleagues, and/or collaborators privately reach out to ask "Do you really think *I* should apply?" My answer is almost always an enthusiastic "YES!" If you're a service-minded leader (in any sector) then the Presidential Leadership Schools Program is among the best programs you'll find. A joint initiative of four former U.S. Presidents, PLS assembles a diverse cohort of high-potential leaders from all sectors to develop their leadership skills. Successful scholars are civically minded, open to feedback, accepting of diverse perspectives, and committed to meaningful change. 💡🌐 We need these leaders now more than ever! The 6-month program is an incredible opportunity to grow as a leader and make an impact. 💪💫🌍 If you have 10+ years of meaningful professional experience, a demonstrated record of leadership and influence, and a commitment to the program, I encourage you to apply by the July 14, 2024 deadline. Learn more about the program, qualifications, and application process on the Presidential Leadership Scholars website linked below. I'm proud to have helped develop PLS when I was at the Clinton Foundation, to be involved in the finalist review process each year (with some of the nicest folks ever at the George W. Bush Presidential Center), and I can't wait to see the next class of inspiring scholars. 👏 #PLScholars #Leadership #ProfessionalDevelopment #ImpactBeyondBelief #SocialImpact

New in SO! 🆕 "The Burden of Being Atypical: The Impact of (A)typicality in Leader Profiles on Organizational Reputation" ⚠️ (👉 https://lnkd.in/dTfX58Ca) by Young-Chul Jeong (Concordia University), Jaegoo Lim (Lingnan University), DONGHOON SHIN (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater), & Saeid Bazmohammadi (Concordia University). Organizations often hesitate to appoint leaders with atypical profiles due to potential reputational penalties. The authors show that deviations from traditional leadership expectations, such as career path, education, or minority status, can harm an organization’s reputation. #leader #organizationalreputation #leaderprototypes #atypicality

Great course on crisis leadership. Some of the best tools that I have come across in my professional career come from this NPLI course at Harvard University.
The National Preparedness Leadership Initiative is pleased to announce our upcoming Crisis Leadership Executive Education Program, at Harvard University, December 8-13. Here is the opportunity to learn Meta-Leadership, Swarm Leadership, and the Walk in the Woods - ideas, practices, and pragmatic tools - from the instructors who researched and developed these frameworks. NPLI alum, who form a network of cutting edge crisis response leaders, are at the front lines of this important and emerging field. The cost has been lowered and the time commitment has been compressed to make the knowledge, skills, and capacity to lead more accessible. Leadership matters. Join us and be part of this exciting and critically relevant field.

Emotional intelligence is a foundational element of effective presidential leadership. In our recent study on presidential leadership competencies, focus groups provided valuable insights into this essential skill, emphasizing self-awareness, the importance of seeking guidance, and the power of humility. In this clip from our webinar, one of the lead researchers of the study, Jorge Burmicky, Ph.D., shares how emotional intelligence helps leaders build resilience and adapt to the unique challenges of higher education. 7 Key Tensions Every Leader Must Balance In decades past, executives were usually taught to practice command-and-control leadership. Today they’re often advised to be more nimble, more adaptive, and less controlling. The truth is that most executives need to be able to move back and forth between those two leadership styles. IMD leadership professor and social psychologist Jennifer Jordan offers tactics for navigating these tensions.

Being an effective leader requires more than just being in a leadership position. At our final “Identity and Leadership Program” workshop, hosted by Rutgers University Equity and Inclusion, we discussed the research on attributes people want in their leaders. The data is clear that attributes fostering inclusivity are key. However, the incentives, pressures, and norms of academia often underprioritize these and focus mainly on task competency, experience, and micropolitical connections when selecting leaders. Excited to get to a place where the former and latter are both important at productive organizations. Rutgers University Diversity #leadership #academia

Discerning leadership is a big deal. It is a critical personal, professional, family and frankly, life decision. It is for this reason that I’m honoured to be asked to speak to aspiring leaders about this life-choice in school boards across Ontario. In these conversations I lead participants through an exploration of self-awareness, role-awareness and a reflection on these two dimensions in determining their areas of gap and fit for leadership. Self-selection or a long-burning ambition to be a leader don’t cut it as rationales for choosing this path. In fact, many of the most effective leaders are those who enter leadership almost reluctantly. These are the leaders who are most apt to create cultures of trust because of their natural humility and vulnerability. In this regard, I am brutally honest in these sessions about ensuring that this decision needs to be informed by trusted information and authentic voices from reliable sources. At the end of this discernment process, there is no shame in saying no to leadership because the contributions to student success are varied and not exclusive to leaders. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment
