H3X Technologies has closed a $20 million Series A funding round led by deep tech investment firm Infinite Capital. The oversubscribed funding round also saw participation from Hanwha Asset Management Co., Ltd., Cubit Capital, Origin Ventures, Industrious Ventures and Venn10 Capital, LP. The developers of acoustic detection systems for locating artillery and mortar firing positions, Vidar Systems, have secured funding from several angel investors and a Czech venture fund, Presto Ventures. This is Presto Ventures' first investment in Ukrainian defense innovation. It’s great to see somebody finally aim and fully target seed investment for significant sustainable impact. I love what Blackhorn ventures are doing, but in reality, to create sustainable survival planet we need 10 times this much activity at the bare minimum. According to the WSJ article, venture capital is increasingly flowing into defense-tech startups, signaling a major shift in the industry. Startups like Anduril are leading the way, leveraging private capital to innovate faster than traditional defense contractors. While challenges exist, such as scaling production and adapting to real-world conflicts, the growing demand for advanced, autonomous systems—particularly in potential conflicts like those with China—presents a significant opportunity. For VCs, the potential for high-impact innovation and the chance to disrupt an industry dominated by legacy players make defense-tech startups an attractive investment.

I think there is a lot of merit in the notion of bringing private sector funding into Defence in Australia. However, VC’s are not a charity. The ADF needs to be a ‘good customer’ and commit to long term orders. The Australian Defence market in itself is ‘sub-scale’ so Australian Defence businesses need to be competing globally and on the same basis as their international competitors - with the same level of incentives and assistance (such as Offsets and government manufacturing support - such as OSC). Finally, VCs need a clear funding pathway and exit path - so access to Australian Super Funds (through a realignment of the definition of ESG) as part of the business raise process and an exit to an exchange that recognises the business value will be essential if successful Defence businesses are to remain Australian owned. So definitely worthwhile doing, but we need to make sure the private sector investment pathway is complete from start to finish.
