🚜🌱 Reflecting on ASQI's Visit to WOTR in Jalna 🌱🚜 We are excited to share highlights from our recent visit to the Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) farm in Jalna. This trip was all about diving deeper into the ginger market linkage and maize-soybean supply chain finance, and it truly opened our eyes to the challenges and opportunities facing farmers. Meeting the farmers was the highlight of the visit. Hearing their stories and understanding their daily struggles was both humbling and inspiring. The discussions around the ginger market were particularly insightful. It’s clear that establishing strong market connections can empower these farmers, helping them secure better prices and ensuring that their high-quality produce reaches the right consumers. We also explored the maize-soybean supply chain finance model, which is crucial for helping farmers access the resources they need. Learning about the financial challenges they encounter and how innovative solutions can make a real difference was a powerful reminder of why ASQI does what it does. At ASQI, we believe in the power of community and collaboration. Our time at WOTR reinforced our commitment to supporting farmers and finding ways to enhance their livelihoods through sustainable practices. In the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, along the banks of the temperamental Jayanti River, resided the small village of Bhutia Basti. Founded before India’s independence, this community, primarily of Bhutanese descent, faced a unique set of challenges. Living within the core area of Buxa Tiger Reserve meant contending with nature’s fury, particularly the annual floods that cut them off from the outside world. Dolomite mining, their primary livelihood, ceased in 1983 when the area became a wildlife sanctuary. Limited opportunities for sustenance, coupled with constant human-animal conflict, painted a grim picture for Bhutia Basti’s future. Speaking with Indian Masterminds, IFS officer Debashish Sharma, currently posted as the Deputy Field Director of Buxa Tiger Reserve, shared about the whole relocation process that took place to move the villagers to their new homes. Recognizing these hardships, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) prioritizes relocating villages from core areas to safeguard wildlife habitats. Following these guidelines, the Forest Department reached out to Bhutia Basti’s 78 families. “Fortunately, the villagers understood the ecological importance of their relocation and willingly opted for a new beginning,” Mr. Sharma shared. The NTCA offers two options for relocation: a cash compensation package or resettlement in a designated buffer zone with land, housing, and essential amenities. Bhutia Basti chose the former, receiving a substantial compensation of Rs. 15 lakh per adult (aged 18 and above). This initiative wasn’t solely driven by wildlife conservation. Uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the villagers was equally important. The Alipurduar District Administration provided each beneficiary family with 8 decimals of land patta (land ownership rights) in a non-forest area called BonoChaya Village, a name bestowed by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, meaning ‘Forest Shelter’ or ‘Forest Life’. Many young people's first exposure to organic agriculture is through travel. ✈️🌐 In my early 20s, I backpacked around Asia, drawn by the culture and the desire to see the world. By a stroke of luck, I found myself “WWOOF”-ing across New Zealand, work trading on various market gardens, homesteads, orchards, and food forests on both islands. It was a defining moment for my personal relationship with agriculture. Without it, I doubt regenerative agriculture would be my focus today. I grew up in the heart of industrial agriculture in Nebraska and "WWOOF"-ing in New Zealand gave me the contrast that I needed to understand the wider spectrum of farming firsthand. WWOOF - Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms helps more than 75,000 people annually volunteer on farms across 100 different countries. Some of these farms are for profit, growing organic food for sale. Some are more self-sufficient families aiming to grow their own food. Some are eco-centered communities composed of inspired individuals. Volunteers exchange four to six hours of work per day for accommodation and food. And stays can range from a few days to months, depending on the hosts needs and the volunteers desires. The experiences vary tremendously from country to country. But they all share something in common. To connect people to farming and experiences that foster more ecologically minded living. But it's not all as smooth or glorious as it sounds. Most people I've met who have "WWOOF"-ed have stayed with a host that has taken advantage of their "free labor" or where accommodations were rough or food inadequete. But I deem those experiences “right of passages.” I still find myself recommending anyone traveling wanting to experience agriculture to browse WWOOF - Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms to find hosts. It's a cheaper way to travel, allowing you to save on accommodations and food, while honing your farming skills and immersing yourself into the culture through working alongside locals. 🌱 This week, during the #ClimateSmartAdvisors General Assembly, we visited Organic Dairy Farm Rozbeki in Latvia. Managed by Edgars and his family since 1992, this farm epitomizes sustainable agriculture and innovation. 👨🌾 Family-run, with Edgars, his parents, and occasionally their children involved, they maintain high welfare standards with dedicated staff. 🌾 Transitioning from pig to dairy farming, Rozbeki adapted to the local climate, starting with Latvian brown cows before shifting to organic dairy farming in 2004, following Latvia's EU accession. 🔧 Modernized with EU funds, the farm features upgraded facilities including a loose housing system, Lely milking robot, automatic feeders, and cow comfort enhancements. They prioritize animal welfare with peat bedding and sophisticated manure management. 🐮 Now raising Holstein cows for higher milk yield, Rozbeki operates efficiently over 3 hectares, demonstrating commitment to both productivity and sustainability. This resilient little thing. Look at her bloom. My drip lines stopped working the spring of 2023 at our short term rental, part time vacation home. The prior owners weren’t full time either so they built an elaborate watering system for the gardens. So elaborate that I need a professional to troubleshoot. But finding help at the lake is hard. Irrigation companies have bigger projects to tend. I now have all these planters with traces of decomposing plants from summers past. And I can’t bring myself to give up and rip the system out. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this over the weekend. The sometimes perennial, usually annual petunia. Beating the odds. On her own. Pushing through. Thriving. And as amazing as she is, I wonder what she could be if she were regularly watered. Nourished with fertilizer. Pruned from time to time. So new growth can happen. Beating the elements is remarkable. But, this beautiful anomaly can’t be the expectation. Just like this petunia, everyone deserves the conditions to flourish. In our workplaces, communities, and families, we can choose to provide support, resources, and care. So let this resilient little petunia be a call to action. Yes, let’s recognize the strength of those who overcome adversity. And let’s build a world where such struggles are no longer necessary. Turkey is a country built on fertile land. However, climate change and similar problems are serious structural problems for today's agricultural sector. These structural problems cause loss of efficiency and quality problems in production. In today's world, we need to create a resilient agricultural sector against climate change. This requires learning to use limited resources responsibly. To prepare our current profile of farmers for resilient agricultural production, cooperation between the public sector, private sector, and academia is essential! There are also structural problems in the agricultural sector. Today, accessing basic agricultural inputs is becoming increasingly difficult for farmers. Due to the imbalance in the general economic situation and exchange rates, agricultural inputs have become a significant economic burden for farmers. Today, despite structural problems, I celebrate the efforts of farmers who contribute to Turkey's development.

Once again, we were invited to take part in a Montepuez government session to present our 2023/2024 performance. This has been an important platform not only to share information with the district government but also to align and manage expectations from the government regarding our project. Our project has clearly been impacting positively the lives of hosting communities. Our surrounding villages have been registering notable a socio-economic growth. Villagers are replacing grass roofs by zinc sheets, there is increase of taxi motorbikes, shops selling various groceries, brand-new clothes and also used ones. As CSR initiative, Nairto Resources Limitada has installed solar road lights in Nairoto and this has been the pivot for sudden change of the commercial dynamic. Today the villagers do not have to go all the way long to Montepuez for groceries because Nairoto offers the basics. Our Objective as a company is to improve the living conditions of our hosting communities by empowering & inspiring them towards sustainable development.
