Do you know that global fisheries and aquaculture production hit a record high of 167 million tonnes in 2022? This growth is crucial in combating food insecurity. However, we still face challenges with sustainability, as 37.7% of the world’s fish stocks were overfished in 2021. It’s clear that while progress is being made, there’s still work to be done to protect marine ecosystems and ensure long-term food security." #fisheries #Aquaculture #Sustainability #MarineEcosystem

Below depicts a thoughtful graph of the United States total consumption of seafood over time. Looking closer, a contrast between freshwater and marine seafood via wild caught and aquaculture are presented as well. Freshwater aquaculture has been quite successful in the U.S. from rearing species like catfish, tilapia, carp, and crawfish. However, marine aquaculture is very behind in terms of production versus wild caught marine species for consumption. During my studies at University of Florida, I analyzed the fundamental economics of aquaculture and commercial fisheries. It is a complete no brainer to me that the opportunity to grow within the seafood industry would be to invest in marine aquaculture. Most of the wild marine fish stocks have reached overfished status. The United States is the largest net importer of seafood in the world. To balance out our trade deficit, we need to invest more into marine aquaculture. Source: Title: Securing a sustainable future for US seafood in the wake of a global crisis https://lnkd.in/eJgyye9T

Marine fisheries and aquaculture represent a key source of income, food security, nutrition and employment in many developing countries, particularly the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS). All South-South trade in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors has experienced large growth over the past decade, reaching double or even triple digits. In 2022, South-South trade across various fisheries sectors — marine fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing, and fishing vessels — amounted to $39 billion. Developing countries’ exports of fisheries and aquaculture processed products now account for 53% of the global share. These countries have also made significant strides in value addition within their industries. Developing countries also exhibit notable trade competitiveness in various marine species and by-products. However, these activities are currently threatened by over fishing, harmful subsidies, climate change and pollution. Read the report: https://ow.ly/OBYF50STIzx

The FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) is the largest global gathering of policymakers, experts and partners in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. This week’s (8-12 July) #COFI36 meeting will focus on the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in tackling food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty, stressing their ability to alleviate hunger, drive sustainable growth, and reverse environmental degradation. "An increasingly expanding global aquaculture sector is driving the supply of fish and fishery products to new records. In 2022, aquaculture overtook capture fisheries as the main supplier of aquatic animals. Ensuring the expansion of sustainable aquaculture is of fundamental importance for consumers,” QU Dongyu, the Director-General of FAO. Marine Polyculture Food Security and Sustainability Marine and inland fisheries together with aquaculture provide an important contribution to Australia's food security. Not only is seafood an important source of protein but it also provides a form of income. Australia's fisheries and aquaculture sectors contribute over $5 billion to the economy each year.
Marine Polyculture Food Security and Sustainability Australian research has led to well-developed fishing and aquaculture industries that contribute nutritious food to domestic and global markets. If Australia is to respond to increasing global demand, we will need to develop internationally competitive, sustainable, profitable, high intensity and high production capacity in new and existing food products, and in new and existing regions of Australia.
