Fisheries GoI To boost fish production, seaweed farming offers a promising solution. However, before fully embracing this practice, it is crucial for the central government and all stakeholders to identify and address the existing gaps in #seaweed_farming. This includes improving infrastructure, providing adequate training to farmers, and ensuring sustainable practices. By resolving these issues, we can effectively integrate seaweed farming into our fish production strategies, leading to a more sustainable and productive future for the industry.

Do you know that global fisheries and aquaculture production hit a record high of 167 million tonnes in 2022? This growth is crucial in combating food insecurity. However, we still face challenges with sustainability, as 37.7% of the world’s fish stocks were overfished in 2021. It’s clear that while progress is being made, there’s still work to be done to protect marine ecosystems and ensure long-term food security." #fisheries #Aquaculture #Sustainability #MarineEcosystem

At GSI, we understand the importance of shared standards to achieve a more sustainable aquaculture sector. That’s why we are pleased that the FAO Committee on Fisheries has adopted new Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA). The GSA are a set of principles and best practices countries and stakeholders can use to make the aquaculture sector more “productive, efficient, resilient, climate-smart, and socially and environmentally responsible.” They serve as a roadmap for countries planning and implementing frameworks and policies that support aquaculture. Stay tuned - over the next month, we’ll be sharing updates on several policy areas covering nutrition, welfare and sustainable feed sourcing included in the GSA.
