Congratulations to COSCO SHIPPING on its LNG dual-fuel very large crude carrier (VLCC), Yuan Rui Yang, which has been selected as one of the top 20 corporate sustainability case examples by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). During Yuan Rui Yang’s 18 voyages since delivery – it has fully utilised the emissions-saving benefits of operating with LNG, achieving up to a 23% reduction of GHG emissions, up to 95% reduction of NOx emissions, and virtually zero SOx and particulate matter emissions – supporting human health with improved local air quality for crew welfare, whilst minimising environmental impact with immediate GHG reductions. Shipping decarbonisation is more pressing an issue than ever, with multi-layered environmental regulations fast approaching. Today, waiting is not an option. For vessels like Yuan Rui Yang, decarbonisation can start now with LNG. And, continue to net-zero GHG emissions for 2050 and beyond – via biomethane and e-methane, utilising existing LNG bunkering infrastructure and proven, safe shipboard technology. On 1 January 2025, the FuelEU Maritime regulation will enter force, requiring vessel fleets sailing in EU territorial waters to cap their lifecycle greenhouse gases (GHG) at 89.34 g CO₂-eq/MJ through 2029. This law has prompted marine shippers to gradually include renewable fuels into their fuel mix, such as CMA CGM, which conducted a successful pilot of the bunkering of liquified #biomethane (LBG) on 19 October. The pilot took place at the Port of Amsterdam where Shell delivered 100 tonnes of LBG, while another LBG bunkering operation is expected at the port of Singapoure, as part of the Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC). A recent study by SEA-LNG asserts that LBG could cover up to 3% of the total energy demand for shipping fuels in 2030 and 13% in 2050. https://lnkd.in/dMNrJRzr

Another day, another milestone in shipping’s alternative fuel transition! Congratulations to the Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor for conducting a successful pilot for the bunkering of mass-balanced liquefied biomethane at the Port of Rotterdam. A total of 100 tonnes of mass-balanced liquefied biomethane was supplied by Shell on 19th October to the CMA CGM container ship CMA CGM TIVOLI. Our COO, Steve Esau, commenting on the latest progress notes: “With COP 29 having recently drawn to a close, we’re delighted to see one of the key outcomes from COP 26, the Clydebank Declaration to develop green shipping corridors, bearing real fruit via the Rotterdam-Singapore corridor and liquefied biomethane.” “With SEA-LNG leading the Methane Track of the Rotterdam-Singapore Green Corridor, we have been developing pilots to test regulatory and buyer acceptance of ISCC EU certified mass balanced LBM as a marine fuel in both Rotterdam and Singapore. Our aim is to help create the commercial framework enabling LBM and other alternative marine fuels to scale.” “This moment marks a major milestone in the alternative fuels transition and has required collaboration from across the entire biomethane value chain, from producers, terminal operators, ports, shipping lines and bunker fuel suppliers. It sets a precedent for other green corridor initiatives and provides lessons for the shipping industry’s transition to alternative marine fuels.” Read more on the announcement here: https://lnkd.in/edBnFDus #Decarbonisation #LNG #ShipsAndShipping

In an interview with S&P Global, Jesse Fahnestock, the project director for decarbonisation at the Global Maritime Forum, spotlights the European Union's Fit for 55 programme as an essential first step in highlighting the role of national and regional governments in advancing sustainable shipping practices. Read full article ➡ https://bit.ly/3Jhc4ZU "We expect that other countries will follow suit, though maybe using different tools such as subsidies, contracts for difference and the like," says Fahnestock. He also advocates for the exploration of hydrogen-based fuels such as e-methanol and e-ammonia for a green transition, casting doubts on LNG's efficacy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For a deeper dive into what trade flows for zero-emission fuels could look like by 2030, read our latest report ➡ https://bit.ly/4axqLUI Our Getting to Zero Coalition is driving industry ambition by focusing on mid-term measures to align with the revised strategy. Fahnestock also stressed the importance of transparency through initiatives like the Sea Cargo Charter and the Poseidon Principles.

Great views from Alexander Döll and Methanol Institute . Time is for co operation and this needs an All hands on deck approach including Low carbon options like Blue methanol which is cost effective. Trust IMO rules will be much suited for low carbon products and then transitioning towards Greener/renewable options
As shipowners navigate the complexities of the energy transition, their flexible and adaptive approach deserves recognition. Shipping, at its core, is a business of risk management, and the choice of fuel is no exception. It's crucial that we focus on collaboration rather than competition. At Methanol Institute we believe that the entire shipping ecosystem—suppliers, buyers, and carriers—must work together to help charterers and end consumers understand that the journey toward a greener future comes with a higher price tag. In my recent op-ed in TradeWinds I discuss this topic further, particularly in light of Maersk’s consideration of adding LNG-fueled vessels alongside its methanol-powered fleet. The overlooked truth here is that collaboration, not competition, will drive our industry forward. Today's announcement from Ørsted regarding the shutdown of the Flagship One renewable methanol project in Sweden is a stark reminder of the challenges we face. While this decision is disappointing and certainly a setback in our journey to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, it does not diminish the potential of green methanol as a critical marine and aviation fuel. However, Ørsted’s move highlights the urgent need for strong national government support at the International Maritime Organization to drive investment in green fuel production capacity. Our commitment to the energy transition must remain steadfast, even in the face of such challenges. A.P.
