I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, former Secretary for Transport and Housing of Hong Kong, for being our guest speaker in last week's Ecostride Instagram Check-in Challenge. As my professor during my Master's in Public Policy at HKUST, Prof. Cheung always impressed us with his expertise in Hong Kong's greener transport options and the importance of self-behavioral change. During his session, Prof. Cheung shared valuable insights and practical green tips for eco-friendly traveling. According to the 2024 Leading Maritime Cities (LMC) report jointly released by DNV and Menon Economics, Singapore retains its coveted position, followed closely by Rotterdam and London. 🇸🇬Why Singapore? With its robust infrastructure, strategic geographic location, pro-business policies, and pioneering initiatives in the maritime energy transition, Singapore continues to set the standard for maritime excellence. The city-state's large owned and managed vessel fleets further solidify its position as a maritime powerhouse, poised to maintain its leadership for the next five years. 📑Insights from the Report: The LMC report evaluates maritime cities based on five pillars: Shipping Centers, Maritime Finance and Law, Maritime Technology, Ports and Logistics, and Attractiveness and Competitiveness. One of the important chicken-or-egg questions facing the Czech economy is direct flight connections. The more direct connections an airport has, the easier it is do business. The easier it is to do business, the better the chance to attract investment, and the more fertile the environment for the technology development essential for a sustainable start-up sector. Airlines see it differently. They want to maximize the number of people on planes, particularly in the premium seats, and minimize the number of flights required to achieve this maximum number. That boils down the negotiation. The Prague AIrport needs to persuade airlines that the possibility of full planes is a sturdy probability before airlines will devote their scarcest capacity- a plane- to the Prague route. To present a convincing pitch, Jiří Pos of the Prague Airport needs data on business travel. He also needs travellers from Brno to choose Prague over Vienna, and traveller from Ostrava to fly out of the Vaclav Havel Airport instead of Krakow. He explained his dilemma to the AmCham CZ Tourism Council the morning after the Czech hockey team won the world tournament. The celebration outside the office was still subsiding. If we could stretch the patriotism to supporting the investment a nationwide public transit system that overcome the bottleneck of D1 and deposit travelers fast and conveniently at the check-in counters of the airport, the country might receive a lasting benefit that would help make the promise of an innovative economy into a reality. Another investment that would help is a true technology park in Prague. The airport wants to develop unused land into an airport city. Part of that city could be a hub where universities, private research labs, company technology departments, and start-ups mix and mingle- and investors, scientists, research executives and top professors can fly in to take part in key meetings and presentations. Bert Hesselink of CTP and our Real Estate Council will be meeting with the airport to explain how these parks work in Holland. The airport is essential piece of infrastructure for an innovative economy. It ability to spread value-added investment depends on the strength of the public transport web connected to its terminals. If we connect Brno and Ostrava more directly to the airport, that will attract the rest of the world to connect as well. What can soft values of ports give - how does a port get general acceptance for its operations? Cargo #ports all over the world are moving more and more outside the city centers, but passenger and cruise ports are still often located in city centers. Tourists then have good connections and a short journey from the city to the port. This is the case in, for example, Helsinki, Turku, Stockholm, Tallinn and Mariehamn. However, this passenger traffic or combined passenger and cargo traffic can also be experienced as a disturbing and non-urban activity – port operations in city centers are no longer considered necessary. One can look at the harbor from many angles. Regarding city ports, Eric Van Hooydonk's soft values can help in avoiding conflicts and in strengthening the common will of the city residents and the port. The master's thesis on the Port of Tallinn says that in addition to the economic and functional functions of the ports, the soft values of the ports help to develop the wider impact of the ports on society and culture. 【Promotion】 Road mobility is a double-edged sword: it’s essential for logistics within the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Hong Kong, yet it’s also the source of significant roadside emissions, contributing to 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. The cross-boundary transport not only affects roadside air quality but also poses a challenge to public health and climate change mitigation efforts. The panel discussion will focus on evaluating the integration of road transport within the urban mobility masterplan and exploring impactful strategies, technological advancements, and policy measures to mitigate emissions and enhance air quality in road transportation across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. According to DNV and Menon Economics’ 2024 Leading Maritime Cities (LMC) report, Singapore is expected to retain its position as the world’s top maritime city for the next five years. The city-state's impressive reputation for maritime innovation and its investments into green transformation and digital technologies are highlighted as the primary reasons it has managed to consistently be placed at the top of the LMC list. Dr. Shahrin Osman, Director, Maritime Decarbonization and Smart Shipping Centre of Excellence, Global Business Development at DNV Maritime, said: “Despite the challenges facing the industry, Singapore has appeared unaffected, managing to retain its position as the world’s leading maritime city. DNV’s analysis has identified it as the most attractive and competitive city in the maritime space, with the city-state being viewed by experts as the preeminent shipping center and a top choice for relocating shipping operations.” Similar to previous iterations, the study benchmarks each maritime city on five pillars, of which Singapore emerged as the best performer in three of the categories.
