In response to the alarming 600% rise in hate-based graffiti, Patients & Purpose has partnered with the Chicago-based nonprofit, Life After Hate, to launch HateEraser, the first aerosol-gel based formula designed to quickly eradicate hate speech from most surfaces. The cans are custom created with street artists to help inspire change within our communities. Each hand painted can tells a different story of acceptance, anti-hate, and empathy. Life After Hate is partnering with police stations across the country to distribute HateEraser as part of a new program in which first-time offenders are required to use it during court-mandated community service. This initiative is based on the belief that educating offenders on the damage their actions cause can help prevent them from continuing a life of hate. West Harlem arts centers share their stories of life after the pandemic S/O to Elliot Heath and The Columbia Spectator for this excellent profile of four of our grantees (The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds) and the crucial work that they do in our community. West Harlem has always been a haven for creative expression, boasting an array of arts-based organizations and community centers. With nonprofits in particular, outside funding and government grants help sustain programming, which can bolster community involvement. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, presented unforeseen hardships to small businesses across the city, including artistic centers. The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds, who all receive funding from the West Harlem Development Corporation, are four West Harlem-based organizations that faced such challenges. Holiday Greetings Family, I hope this holiday season brought you joy, peace, and a renewed sense of Purpose. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who supported our Christmas initiative this year. From The Hood For The Hood Partnering with Miss North America, we came together to adopt a family of six—soon to be seven. Together, we were able to provide them with gifts and housing for the Christmas season through New Year’s. That’s what community is all about—lifting each other up when it matters most. But our work doesn’t stop here. As we step into the new year, I’m excited to share our upcoming community initiatives. On January 9th, my Fraternity’s Founders Day (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and on MLK Day (Jan 20th) (The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center) ), we’ll continue serving our communities by: - Providing catered styled meals to those who are experiencing homelessness - Bringing joy to animals in shelters by dropping treats off for the fur babies at several animal shelters- Cleaning up neighborhoods to create safer, more vibrant spaces - And rolling out a few surprises to inspire hope and progress. You can help us take the reins! The culture of NW Hearts United is GROUNDED in the idea of deep mutual CONNECTION- our need for one another and paying that forward. For almost 10 years, we have consistently served an average of 400 hearts annually. Traditionally, youth have primarily been our focus but as one of the only equine-facilitated services nonprofit organizations in the area for all ages, our services for women, men, parents, veterans, and first responders have been increasingly sought after because they work when nothing else does. Currently, we are proud to report that we serve youth to adult clients at about 70/30%. Community partners, parents, schools, and veteran organizations are desperate to find partners with interventions that work at a cost their clients can afford, and thanks to community support, we are able to respond. We know we can do more, but we can't do it alonei. Our goal for 2025 is to support 200+ more participants. And his legacy reminds us of the work necessary to advance nation's ongoing journey towards equality and justice. His dream isn't just a historical narrative—it's a living, breathing call to action. In his words, "Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality." This is the 30th anniversary of MLK Day being formally designated a National Day of Service. We urge all members of our Eagle Creek family to find a way to serve others in a way that is meaningful to you. If you are looking for in-person opportunities in your area, many towns, schools, and religious institutions host services opportunities throughout the long weekend. For workday service opportunities after the MLK Holiday, keep in mind our Eagle EGG program that enables you to use paid leave to perform your service. Since its inception, the Eagle EGG has supported our colleagues in providing thousands of hours of service in their communities. If you can’t give time this weekend, consider supporting communities currently facing the consequences of natural disasters in states where we operate: -NC V.O.A.D: find ways to volunteer and/or donate. -NC Community Foundation: provides a roadmap for supporting Western North Carolina communities. -Direct Relief: this organization uses donations to provide health care to displaced people in both LA County and Western North Carolina -World Central Kitchen: this organization is feeding displaced residents and first responders in LA County However you choose to mark Dr. King’s legacy, let's strive to make a difference in our communities, both over this holiday weekend and throughout the year!

Victor Hurlburt Story: Ten years ago, I met Carolyn Moor at a public speaking event in Orlando. At the time, I was a semi-retired environmental engineer and a #widower, trying to make sense of my own experience. Over the years, I have volunteered my time to help Modern Widows Club®️ | The Movement for Widow Care (MWC) in a variety of ways—from increasing media exposure to building key partnerships and assisting with important tasks like removing MWC from state domestication filings. After years of turning down a formal role, I have now accepted the position of Treasurer on the MWC Board of Directors. I’m excited to continue supporting the health, well-being, and empowerment of widows through this new role. Looking back on how MWC has grown, I feel incredibly proud of the impact we’ve had on so many women’s lives. I know firsthand how difficult widowhood can be—the sense of loneliness, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming new realities. But what MWC offers is more than just support; it’s a community where widows can rebuild, grow, and thrive. I’ve seen the power of this community, and it’s been an honor to be a part of it. The work we do is transformative, not only for the women we serve but for the entire widowhood experience. Detroit built the world's first concrete-paved road, but it wasn't just for cars! Did you know that the Good Roads Movement – a 19th century push by groups like the League of American Bicyclists for paved roads for BIKES – was the real impetus for the smooth roads we now ride and drive on? I learned this and so much more when I worked with MoGo Detroit to tell the story of their innovative non-profit bike share program, a part of the Downtown Detroit Partnership. In the process, we captured the stories of their key stakeholders as well as the energy and excitement of their first-ever community fundraising event, MoGo-a-GoGo. We turned those testimonials into evergreen video content that I hope will serve them for years – and hopefully drive more Detroiters – and suburbanites too! – out onto two wheels.
