𝗕𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴? Chagee has quickly become a massive hit in Singapore with huge queues outside its stores. But while everyone’s lining up for the milk tea, I can’t help but notice something else… Chagee’s cup design looks almost identical to Dior’s iconic Book Tote. And let’s be honest, this isn’t just ‘inspiration’—it’s a clear rip-off. Is it a clever marketing move to borrow from a luxury brand, or is it crossing the line into blatant imitation? For me, it feels like the latter. In an era where originality is so important for branding, why are some companies getting away with copying high fashion for a quick image boost? So what do you think—genius marketing or lazy copycat?

As much as I like this "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" I do agree that copying everything has its limits. When will it stop? When will copying be actually reprimanded? Sadly China is in the Madrid protocol which recognizes IP infringement worldwide, so not sure why World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO isn't paying attention?

Pretty narrow-minded, considering that you haven't considered about Christian Dior ripping off the classic China porcelain design as culture appropriation.

Chagee is possibly skirting IP issues by claiming ‘this is just a blue porcelain design that’s common in yunnan province’. ;) But one can easily fathom a guess that positioning of the text and the motif design as a mirror image to Dior bag design were intentionally meant to trigger some social banter and virality - I’ve seen lotssss of young folks posting on Lemon8 and TikTok on how these cups are collectibles. That said, curious if Chagee released some tote bag merch with same design. Now for that I’d be surprised if they got away with it without getting some flak from Dior’s legal.

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness”. Also having witnessed the same, I realised it’s a Dior x Starbucks collab 😂

asia don't really value IP, remember we are closer to china geographically than to US or western europe. That really influence our prespective a lot.

Typical Chinese mindset, copy, make it cheap, scale adoption quickly, but it undeniably works

"Heavily inspired" seems to be appropriate here 😉

Interesting! Reminds me of the whitepaper I read recently - "The Extraordinary Cost of Dull". This act from Chagee is definitely on the other extreme but makes me wonder why this is not so evident in financial services. Who would you mock in wealth management, if given a chance? :)
