🔎 Building Safety in Focus: The Golden Thread 🏗️ We are delighted to feature Jimmy Collins, one of our dedicated SECBE board members, who has shared his thoughts on the critical role of the Golden Thread in improving building safety and compliance in his latest blog. 🌟 "The right people, having the right information, at the right time." 🌟 Jimmy reflects on the lessons learned following the Grenfell Tower tragedy and the subsequent transformation in how the construction sector manages and shares vital information. Highlighting the Building Safety Act and Dame Judith Hackitt’s foundational report, Jimmy emphasizes the need for a robust, transparent, and accessible Golden Thread of Information throughout a building’s lifecycle. 📢 Key Insights: The Golden Thread ensures vital safety and compliance data is accessible to the right people, from design to handover and beyond. Recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry (Part 2) reinforce the importance of accurate, centralized data for materials and systems. While progress has been made, the sector must take more decisive action to deliver on the Golden Thread’s potential to improve safety and accountability. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e7bzfnvC Let’s work together to turn these insights into action and build a safer, more transparent future for the construction industry. #GoldenThread #BuildingSafety #ConstructionLeadership #ConstructingExcellence #IndustryInsights

💫 🏗 The Golden Thread Of Information - A Key to Building Safety 💫🏗 The Golden Thread of Information is defined in the UK’s Building Safety Bill, which was legislated to prevent events similar to the Grenfell Tower disaster in 2017. During an early morning fire, the construction materials and design of the Grenfell Tower caused the fire to dangerously spread and killed 72 people as a result. Following the Grenfell Tower Disaster, Dame Judith Hackitt highlighted that key information within the construction and building management industries was not being effectively managed, or even available throughout buildings’ life cycles especially during changes in ownership. Dame Judith recommended that a “golden thread of key information” using digital tools and systems’ should be used to store, use, and share building information effectively to ensure safer buildings. Now, thankfully, the Building Safety Bill lists the 10 Principles of the Golden Thread of Information. The Principles are: 1. Accurate and trusted 2. Residents feeling secure in their homes 3. Culture change 4. Single source of truth 5. Secure 6. Accountable 7. Understandable/consistent 8. Simple to access (accessible) 9. Longevity/durability and shareability of information 10. Relevant/proportionate 🚧 Call to Action: Construction companies, building owners, and building managers around the world should adopt the 10 Principles of the Golden Thread of Information to make their buildings safer. https://lnkd.in/gfR5xZiD

Upcoming Webinar: Tuesday 5 March 12:30 - Kevin Blunden, Director of Building Consultancy, Acivico Group The devastating fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017 has led to the largest review and reform of the regulation of building safety for over 60 years. The Building Safety Act 2022 associated Regulations and changes to the Building Act 1984 have established a new regime for the enforcement of Building Regulations and has created additional duties for all of those involved in the design, construction and management processes. In April the final changes to regulations and standards come into force which implement the most significant changes to the control of safety in buildings for decades. Alongside strengthened enforcement powers and sanctions for work which fail to meet standards, specific obligations are being placed on duty holders, including the Client, Principal Designer and Principal Contractor. All of those who are involved in the design and construction process, including Clients, Designers, Contractors and those who manage buildings will have significantly increased responsibility in respect of Building Safety, assessing competence and ensuring Building Regulation Compliance, and the webinar is intended to provide information to prepare everyone for their role in making buildings safer. Seven years on and there is still a lot to learn from the Grenfell Tragedy. In our latest blog, we have written a deep dive into the tragic events and the consequent changes to regulations. I'd love it if you gave it a read... https://lnkd.in/e_jqNATt
The Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017 was a turning point in the UK’s building safety landscape. Revealing deep flaws in the regulatory system governing construction and safety standards. It highlighted the need for stricter oversight and a clear distinction between regulatory and consultative roles in building control. In the following years, the relationship between building control officers, clients, and contractors has shifted dramatically. The Building Safety Act 2022 and reforms to Building Regulations have fundamentally altered how building control operates. The focus has shifted from consultation to strict regulation, with building control officers now acting as enforcers of safety standards. We've put together some information about these changes and our thoughts on the effects on not just high-rise structures but buildings of all types. You can read it here https://lnkd.in/e_jqNATt #buildingsafety #grenfell #buildingregulations

Reflecting on Progress: 𝟳 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹 June 14th was the seventh anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, prompting a moment of reflection on the transformative changes within the construction industry since that tragic event. Over the years, our focus has centred on fostering responsibility and driving cultural change within our sector, advocating proactive measures ahead of governmental mandates. Post-Grenfell, the enactment of the Building Safety Act has been pivotal in reshaping our industry, demanding enhanced accountability and ethical standards. Key advancements include: ◾ Establishment of the Building Safety Regulator to oversee high-rise building safety. ◾ Introduction of Dutyholders and Accountable Persons, ensuring meticulous maintenance of comprehensive building information throughout its lifecycle. ◾ Implementation of Gateways Two and Three to validate compliant design and construction phases. ◾ Mandated regular inspections of fire safety systems, promoting enhanced safety for building occupants. ◾ Emphasis on resident engagement and clear fire safety protocols. Non-compliance now carries weightier penalties, underscoring the criticality of adherence to these vital regulations. As we commemorate this anniversary, let us continue to strive for a safer and more responsible built environment. Together, let's honour the memory of Grenfell through sustained commitment to these pivotal reforms.
