About 40% of a building's overall energy usage goes to ventilating, heating, cooling and filtering new air. And as summers continue getting hotter, longer and muggier, the amount of energy required to filter and move air in, out and through buildings is similarly rising. The problem, Carbon Reform Co-Founder and CEO Jo Norris writes, is that buildings' 'single-use' ventilation systems are energy-inefficient and ill-prepared for a hotter, more polluted future. "Most Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, so solving for ventilation systems’ inefficiencies, and improving indoor air, is an untapped opportunity at the intersection of health, equity and climate that could address a massive amount of CO2 without the need for capital-intensive new infrastructure."
