💡 What can Australia learn from the groundbreaking E.U. Social Economy Report? As the European Union releases its comprehensive Social Economy Report, there are valuable lessons for Australia. The report highlights how coordinated efforts and large-scale data collection can enhance the social economy's capacity to influence policies and decision-making, driving meaningful change. It underscores the urgent need for a more unified approach in Australia’s social economy. While Australia’s social economy is growing, a significant gap remains in understanding its full potential. In this interview, Associate Professor Mel Edwards from CSI UNSW shares her perspective on the lessons Australia can draw from the report and where the sector should head next. The good news is that research by the Centre for Social Impact is already underway to bridge this gap... https://lnkd.in/g8R-N8w3 UNSW Business School Prof Danielle Logue

Australia’s social purpose sector is diverse and growing, yet we still lack a coordinated understanding of its full scale, potential and barriers to impact. The wonderful Associate Professor Mel Edwards from CSI UNSW discusses insights from the EU’s social economy report, highlighting the need for better data collection and collaboration across Australia’s for-purpose sectors. At CSI, we’re partnering with organisations to close this knowledge gap through Australia’s first research on the social economy #SocialEconomy #SocialImpact

So far we can’t retrieve a single word on social economy in the mission letters of the European Commission, yet there is plenty of reason to be hopeful. That is what we retain as Smart coöperatie on the Social Economy Europe conference on the 2024-2029 objectives for the social economy in Europe, moderated (brilliantly) by our former colleague Sarah de Heusch on the 17th of October. Our hope is based on the strength of social economy, as the benchmarking report on the socio-economic performance of the EU social economy describes in facts and figures. The SE at large has a key role to play in the accomplishment of the Commissions goals in terms of competitiveness, productivity, innovation, and even defense … as a peacemaker: to create prosperity we need SE (dixit giuseppe guerini). Thanks to the ambition of for instance DG Employment and DG Grow to implement the Social Economy Action Plan, we believe that the Social Economy Intergroup will be renewed. We subscribe the pledge of Carl Forsberg to all social economy actors that we must raise our voices towards (our local) policy makers in order to raise awareness on our actions and ambitions. And like Juan-Antonio Pedreño as president of Social Economy Europe concluded : “Social Economy is and stays the driving force of social, green and digital transformation”. With amongst others: CECOP, Diana Dovgan, Nikolett Szolnoki, Mickaël Bianchin, European Think Tank Pour la Solidarité, Salima Chitalia, Brigitte Fellahi.

Enviable economic buoyancy There are things to be done on equity, deficit management, racial and gender wealth gaps. However there ought to be no doubt about which set of economic policies benefits most Americans. On climate, human rights and stability - there is no choice. Factual analysis still matters. “Even more striking is how America has outperformed its peers among the mature economies. In 1990 America accounted for about two-fifths of the overall gdp of the g7 group of advanced countries; today it is up to about half (see chart). On a per-person basis, American economic output is now about 40% higher than in western Europe and Canada, and 60% higher than in Japan—roughly twice as large as the gaps between them in 1990. Average wages in America’s poorest state, Mississippi, are higher than the averages in Britain, Canada and Germany.”
The American economy has left other rich countries in the dust
