I recently collaborated with a leading environmental consultancy focused on tackling PFAS, also known as 'forever chemicals.' It's alarming how widespread and persistent these substances are, given their links to serious health risks, including cancer and immune system disruption. It's great to see innovative efforts to tackle the issue from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where researchers have developed a sensor capable of detecting tiny amounts of PFAS in drinking water, food packaging, and other consumer products. Traditional detection methods involve mass spectrometry, which can take weeks and cost hundreds of dollars per test. In contrast, MIT's groundbreaking technology uses lateral flow technology—similar to rapid COVID-19 tests—and features a special polymer that changes electrical resistance when PFAS are present. Professor Timothy Swager, the lead researcher, shared their vision for the technology: "We do envision a user-friendly, household system where you could test a liter of water through a membrane and immediately measure any resistance changes. This could drastically simplify and accelerate PFAS detection in everyday environments." While still in development, the potential impact of this technology seems massive.
